An Air Jordan 9 in Randy Moss’s Minnesota Vikings colors is reportedly coming to retail in February 2027, white leather with a purple patent mudguard and gold accents, with “Super Freak” replacing the Jumpman on the tongue. It is a good-looking shoe and a good story. It is also, as of today, entirely unconfirmed, and the name on the tongue belongs to a different sneaker.
Where this actually comes from
Every version of this story traces to one leak, published by SneakerFiles on June 25 in collaboration with zsneakerheadz, and repeated from there. Sneaker Bar Detroit carried it the same day with a February 13, 2027 date, a $215 price and style code JK1415-100. JustFreshKicks came back to it on August 25 and walked those numbers back, listing the style code as TBD and noting the rollout could still shift. Nothing appears on nike.com, nothing on the Air Jordan 9 archive page, nothing on SNKRS, nothing from Jordan Brand at all. The earlier version of this post said the shoe was “reaching the public for the first time.” That was not established then and is not established now.
The Super Freak was not an Air Jordan 9
This is the part the feeds keep garbling. The Super Freak was Moss’s own signature shoe, released in 2000, designed by Gentry Humphrey, and it was the first Air Jordan signature model built for a football player. It is a real object with a real record: the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History holds a pair, catalogued to Moss’s Vikings years. His second signature, the Mossified, followed in 2001. Jordan Brand reissued the Super Freak in 2010 as the Cover 3.
So a 2027 Air Jordan 9 wearing “Super Freak” branding is a nickname transplanted onto a silhouette that never carried it. And there is a likely source for the confusion. Sneaker Bar Detroit reported a genuine Jordan Super Freak “OG” retro in June, style code JA7049-100, White, Black, Varsity Purple and Metallic Silver, $165, for Spring 2027. Two Moss products in the same window, one of them an actual retro of his actual signature shoe. Worth keeping separate.
What Moss really wore
Moss did wear Air Jordan 9s on a football field. Two versions existed, a cleated pair and a turf pair, white base with a purple patent mudguard and yellow accents, both game-worn. Heritage Auctions has sold a size 15 turf pair with “84” embroidered on the tongues and a letter of authenticity, dated to the 2001 season with Minnesota. He also wore Air Jordan 6 cleats, Air Jordan 12 turf shoes and Air Jordan 13 cleats across his career, which is why he gets called the NFL’s original Jordan cleat guy.
One claim to leave alone: the story that Moss was fined by the NFL over his Jordan footwear does not hold up. It is not in Pro Football Reference, not in the Andscape reporting, not in the Smithsonian record, and not in Heritage’s provenance notes. His documented fines are for other things entirely. The uniform-policy version almost certainly bleeds over from Jalen Hurts, who was fined in December 2024 for Air Jordan cleat colors, with Jordan Brand covering it. Anybody repeating the Moss fine should produce contemporaneous reporting first.
Why the 9 is the right shoe for it
The Air Jordan 9 released in 1993, designed by Tinker Hatfield, and Michael Jordan never played an NBA season in it. He was on a baseball field. Nike’s own archive page says as much, that it was never worn by number 23. That absence is exactly what made the 9 useful. Without a championship moment attached to it, the model became a canvas for other people’s stories, and a football receiver’s player exclusive fits it better than it would fit a 6 or an 11.
Moss earns the placement on his own record. Minnesota took him 21st overall in the 1998 draft after he slid through the first round, and he caught 69 passes for 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns as a rookie, taking Offensive Rookie of the Year, a Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in the same season. He went into the Hall of Fame in 2018.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Confirmed: the Air Jordan 9 is a 1993 Tinker Hatfield design, Moss wore Air Jordan 9 cleats and turf shoes with Minnesota, the Super Freak is his 2000 signature model, and a Super Freak OG retro is reported for Spring 2027 at $165. Not confirmed: that an Air Jordan 9 “Super Freak” is releasing at all, its February 13 date, its $215 price, and style code JK1415-100.
