The Air Jordan 5 arrived in 1990, designed by Tinker Hatfield, and Nike’s own history page confirms both. It is the shoe where Hatfield ran shark-tooth shapes along the midsole and paired them with a clear outsole, and those two details are what people picture when they picture an AJ5. Michael Jordan wore it through the 1989 to 1990 season, when Basketball Reference has him at 33.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6.3 assists a game. The shoe was on his feet for a scoring title, one season before the first championship.
The story attached to those teeth deserves a caveat. The widely repeated version credits World War II fighter plane nose art, specifically a P-51 Mustang painted with a shark’s mouth. Sotheby’s has published that account. Nike’s own history page does not mention it anywhere. It is a good story with real circulation and no first-party confirmation, which is a different thing from a fact. Something else here needs correcting outright. The earlier version of this post credited the AJ5 with introducing the lace lock. The documented lace lock hardware belongs to the Air Jordan 4. The AJ5’s own firsts are the shark-tooth midsole, the translucent outsole and the reflective tongue panel, which is a strong enough list without borrowing from the shoe that came before it.
The Sunset build is simple and almost all of the color lives in the midsole. White leather covers the upper with a silver reflective panel on the tongue. The shark teeth are picked out in orange, the outsole runs red, and Fire Red returns on the lining and on the embroidered heel Jumpman. A second Jumpman in orange sits on the tongue with a matching toggle at the lace lock. Every one of those details traces to the same two outlets rather than to Jordan Brand, because no official imagery exists yet. One thing to know before planning around it: this is a women’s release. Sneakersnstuff, which has a live listing, states women’s sizing exclusively. The earlier version of this post said the colorway reads sharp across any sizing run, which suggests a men’s run is coming. Nothing published supports that.
The anniversary framing is doing heavy work in the coverage, so it is worth pinning down. Marketplace listings put the original Sunset at style code 313551-161 and date it to 2006 as a women’s release, which is where the twenty-year figure comes from. No Nike archive page, book or newspaper of record confirms it. The arithmetic is right if the listings are right, and that is a weaker claim than an anniversary Jordan Brand has announced, because Jordan Brand has announced nothing. More interesting than the anniversary is who this is aimed at. Retroing a mid-2000s women’s exclusive, in women’s sizing, with no men’s run attached, is not the safe move. The safe move is a men’s OG colorway. Doing it this way says the brand believes the buyer who wanted this in 2006 is still around and now has the money.
$205 is the figure the coverage carries, and Sneakersnstuff lists it at 210 euros, so at least a blog and a retailer agree. It also sits at the top of the current AJ5 retro band, which means the shoe has to be judged as a full leather retro rather than a colorway exercise, and the white leather upper is where that argument is won or lost. No resale history exists for this makeup yet. The 2006 original trades too thinly to offer a useful comparison, and a recent women’s AJ5 release like the A Ma Maniere Dawn is a closer read on where demand actually sits.
September 25, 2026, is the date every source carries, at a reported $205, style code IV5678-102, in women’s sizing. Jordan Brand has not put up a SNKRS page, so there is nothing official to check against yet. Sneakersnstuff has a live listing in Europe at 210 euros and Flight Club has a page up. Anyone planning on this pair should watch SNKRS for a page to appear rather than treating the date as locked.
