Michael Jordan never wore an Air Jordan 6 Low. It did not exist while he was playing. The high-top he won his first championship in arrived in 1991, and the low-top version turned up eleven years later, in April 2002, as a women’s and grade school release. That is the actual origin of this silhouette, and it reframes what a women’s exclusive Air Jordan 6 Low is. It is not a men’s icon being cut down for a different customer. It is the shoe going back to the only customer it was ever built for.

Two names are circulating and one of them is wrong. Release coverage spent three weeks calling this the Desert Berry. Nike calls it Metamorphosis. Desert Berry is a colour, and it is a colour Nike has recycled across at least eight other models since 2020, from an Air Force 1 High to a women’s Air Jordan 9 to a Dunk Low. The colour string on Nike’s own page reads Black, Desert Berry and Black. The name of the shoe is Metamorphosis, and Foot Locker sells it with no nickname at all.
The parent shoe earns its anniversary. Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 6 for 1991, and Nike’s current copy credits Jordan’s appreciation for Italian sports cars as the reference. Be careful with that, because the version everybody repeats names a German car and nothing supports it. What the 6 carries that no other Jordan does is the first ring. Chicago went through New York three to nothing, Philadelphia four to one, Detroit four to nothing and then Los Angeles four to one. Jordan took Finals MVP averaging 31.2 points, 11.4 assists and 6.6 rebounds. The sweep of the Pistons on the way is the part people forget and the part that mattered most at the time.
The low has none of that history and Jordan Brand is not pretending otherwise. Foot Locker’s copy threads it carefully, saying the heel pull and the lace pocket reference the 1991 original, which is accurate: the high is the original, the low is the reference. The first four Air Jordan 6 Lows landed in April 2002, and the one whose price is on record, a Coral Rose, sold for $105. It has been a rare model ever since, surfacing as a Chrome in 2015, a run of golf versions in 2023, and then twice this year.
Twice this year is the thing to notice. In February Jordan Brand put out an Air Jordan 6 Low called Blackout, women’s exclusive, $205, on a pony hair upper, framed around the model’s 35th anniversary. This one is women’s exclusive, $205, with iridescent panels, framed around the same anniversary. Same price, same category, same year, escalating materials. That is a programme rather than a coincidence, and it is being run without a single word from Nike’s newsroom, which has published nothing about this shoe or the anniversary at all.
What is on it, per Nike: a synthetic leather upper with glossy accents, a foam midsole with visible Air, the lace pocket and lace toggles the 6 is known for, a TPU pull tab at the heel and a tinted outsole. Release coverage describes the upper as black nubuck instead, and Foot Locker splits the difference at synthetic leather and patent. Nike and its own retailer of record agree against the blogs here, which is usually the way to bet.
Retail is $205, which is the number worth holding against the 2002 original’s $105. Adjust for two decades however you like, the women’s Air Jordan 6 Low has roughly doubled in nominal terms while remaining the same basic proposition, a cut-down version of a shoe whose value comes from a championship it was not present for. It also sits at the top end of what Jordan Brand charges for a retro low, and it does so in a year Nike finished flat at $46.4 billion in revenue and down two percent currency neutral.
Style code is IX5195-001. It released September 16 through Nike and SNKRS and Foot Locker, in a women’s size run from 5 to 13. Those are the only two stockists anybody has confirmed. There is no men’s, grade school or toddler version, and every source saying select Jordan Brand retailers has declined to name one.
