Jordan DMSN 95 “Phantom” Turns the Air Jordan 11 Into a Year-Round Shoe

Jordan Brand has spent thirty years rationing the Air Jordan 11. One retro a year, at Christmas, in a supply that has never quite met the room. The DMSN 95 takes that shoe apart and puts it back on the shelf year round, and Jordan Brand did not announce it at all.

Nike is open about the source, at least in the product copy. “Inspired by the AJ11,” it reads, “it brings back the retro style and feel but with a modern twist.” What that means in practice is specific. The Air Jordan 11 Low’s shape and tooling carry over. The patent leather mudguard, the single most recognisable element on any Jordan, is split into three separate panels and stripped of its gloss, rendered in suede. The carbon fibre plate, which on the original is a structural piece you can see through the outsole, becomes a checkerboard graphic printed down the medial wall. Ballistic mesh and a molded cage do the rest.

Reduce a shoe that way and you learn what people were actually buying. The patent was never about materials, it was about shine. The plate was never about torsional rigidity for most owners, it was about the idea that a basketball shoe had a carbon component in 1995. The DMSN 95 keeps the silhouette of both and converts the two signature elements into surface. Whether that reads as clever or as hollow probably depends on how many pairs of the original you have owned.

Two things nobody will tell you about the name. DMSN is reported to stand for Dimension, but that expansion appears in exactly one place, a single sentence on one release site, and has been copied since. Nike prints the four letters on the shoe, the box and two product pages and never once expands them. And the 95 is not explained anywhere either. The obvious read is 1995, because Jordan Brand already sells an MVP 92, which is a low-top reworking of the Air Jordan 7 and lands on the year of Jordan’s MVP season. Same convention, same silence. It is a good inference and it is still an inference.

If 1995 is the reference, it is a stranger year to pick than it sounds. Jordan announced his return on March 18 that year and came back wearing 45 rather than 23, because he wanted to leave the old number behind. He played seventeen regular season games and averaged 26.9 points. He scored 55 at Madison Square Garden and then passed to Bill Wennington for the winning dunk. And then Orlando put the Bulls out of the Eastern Conference semi-finals in six. It is the year of the comeback and also the year the comeback did not work, which is a more interesting thing to name a shoe after than a championship.

The commercial logic is easier to read than the naming. Nike finished its 2026 fiscal year at $46.4 billion, flat on a reported basis and down two percent currency-neutral, with the chief financial officer telling investors the company is managing its product portfolio. A year-coded lifestyle line that monetises the equity of the 7 and the 11 without adding a single pair to retro supply is exactly what managing a product portfolio looks like. Worth noting for anyone who sees a Jordan Brand revenue figure quoted against filings: Nike does not break Jordan Brand out in its annual report at all.

Retail is $135, which sits below the MVP 92 at $145 and well under $230 and up for a retro Air Jordan 11. Nike was already selling the Phantom under that at $121.97 as of this month, which for a shoe released at the start of August is quick. The kids’ run comes in at $105. As a price ladder it is coherent: the takedown costs roughly half the shoe it references, which is the point of a takedown.

Style code is HV4928-005, and Nike’s own colorway string reads Phantom, Palomino and University Red. Foot Locker lists the same shoe as Swan, Phantom and University Red, and Nike’s own search tile calls it Black and Phantom, so three labels are in circulation for one pair. It released August 1 through Nike and Foot Locker, with a Black and Dark Smoke Grey pair and a Reverse Bred already in the line. Nike’s spec sheet says leather upper, release reporting says ballistic mesh with a cage and suede, and the kids’ page says suede and mesh. Treat the construction as unsettled until someone holds a pair.
