The Air Jordan 1 Mid Spells HARE Across the Tongue of Space Jam’s General Release

The Air Jordan 1 Mid Spells HARE Across the Tongue of Space Jam’s General Release

Jordan Brand has spent two months loading its Space Jam thirtieth anniversary collection with retros, cleats, a golf spike and a cross-trainer, and on November 5 it adds the shoe that will actually reach a shopping mall. The Air Jordan 1 Mid SE arrives in light smoke grey, university red and varsity royal, with a red Bugs Bunny struck in the Jumpman pose on the tongue label. Underneath the character, in plain black type, the label reads HARE. Every other pair in the set draws the rabbit. This is the one that names him.

The Air Jordan 1 Mid is the part of the catalogue that anniversary coverage usually skips. It is not a retro of anything. The original Air Jordan 1 from 1985 was a high, and the Mid is a later production shape that borrowed the look and dropped the collar, which is why collectors treat it as a lesser object and why Jordan Brand makes more of it than almost anything else. That volume is the whole point of its existence. A SNKRS draw reaches the people already paying attention. A general-release Mid reaches the ten-year-old who watched the film on a streaming service and has no idea there is a thirtieth anniversary happening. Jordan Brand knows the difference, and it has used the Mid as a story carrier before, most recently when it moved a kids’ line name into men’s sizes on the same silhouette last month. The Hare name itself is older than the film. It belongs to the Air Jordan 7 that arrived in 1992 to run alongside the Bugs Bunny commercial, a white, light silver and true red shoe, four years before Space Jam reached cinemas. The grey and red on this Mid sit in that lineage. The royal blue does not, and Nike lists it as Varsity Royal without explaining it.

The build is better than a Mid usually gets. White leather runs the toe and the quarter, with speckled grey suede filling the eyestay and the heel, and a darker grey nubuck over the collar. The Swoosh is royal blue suede stitched down in contrasting red thread, which is a small expense that shows at arm’s length. Inside, the lining is red and the collar mesh is royal. The Wings logo is tonal grey rather than stamped in a contrast color, and the outsole is grey instead of the usual white or black. The laces are a thick chenille cord rather than flat cotton. The box is not stock either. It is black, printed with Looney Tunes line art and a Bugs figure in green and yellow on the lid, and the inside of the lid carries a comic-strip panel. A printed box on a Mid is unusual enough to be a decision. The toe and the heel panels are perforated in the pattern the silhouette has carried since 1985, which on a speckled suede reads as texture rather than as venting.

What that adds up to is a brand treating its volume shoe like it belongs in the collection rather than like a leftover. The rest of the set is specialist by design. The Air Jordan OG is women’s only, the golf spike is for a golf course, the cleats are for a field, and the Trunner O/S is a cross-trainer most people have never worn. Those are good pieces and they are all narrow. The Mid is the one that has to work on a shelf next to forty other Mids, which is a harder test than a draw, because nothing about an anniversary helps a shoe that looks ordinary in a lineup. Royal suede, red stitching and chenille laces are the brand answering that test with money rather than with graphics.

Retail is $140, which places it in the middle of the collection rather than at the bottom. The Trunner O/S is $130, the Air Jordan OG is $155, the Jordan Triangle is $150 and the Spizike Low is $165. It also matches the Air Jordan 1 Mid Utility from October exactly, so Jordan Brand is charging its current Mid rate and absorbing the licensing and the packaging rather than passing them on. Mids are the one corner of the Jordan line where resale is usually a non-event, and a general release with no announced limit is unlikely to change that.

The Air Jordan 1 Mid SE releases November 5 alongside the rest of the Space Jam collection, style code IZ9293-001, retail $140, in Light Smoke Grey, University Red, Cool Grey and Varsity Royal. Look for it at Nike and at Foot Locker. Nike’s own listing carries no nickname for the pair and names the tie-in only in a Warner Bros licensing line at the bottom of the product details, so HARE on the tongue is the closest thing the shoe has to an official name.
