Jordan Brand is sending the Air Jordan 12 Retro Sumo to Japan only, and the details are worth studying even if you are never getting a pair. The colorway is listed as Black/Night Purple/Metallic Gold-White, built on a black leather upper with purple pebbled leather covering the toe and lower side panels.

The Air Jordan 12 arrived in 1996 as Tinker Hatfield’s most structurally ambitious Jordan to that point, drawing on a 19th century Japanese rising sun flag for the quilted stitching pattern that still defines the shoe three decades later. That Japanese reference has always been part of the 12’s DNA, which makes an atmos-exclusive Japan release feel less like a marketing exercise and more like the model coming home.
The Sumo edition earns its story with laser-etched wave detailing inspired by Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, gold family crest branding on the tongue, custom insoles, and speckled purple and gold outsoles. The timing lines up with the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan’s 1996 trip to Japan.
This signals Nike leaning harder into region-locked storytelling as a way to make retros feel scarce again without touching price or production math. The people who care most about the 12 are the same people who will pay resale to get a Japan-only pair stateside, and Jordan Brand knows it. For everyone else, it is a reminder that the 12’s design language was borrowed from Japan long before this release existed. More Air Jordan coverage is here.
