Air Jordan 5 “Black Carolina” Came Back After 20 Years and Held Its Price

The Air Jordan 5 “Black Carolina” released June 20, 2026 at $220 and is gone from Nike. The first time it existed was 2006, as a Lifestyle Series pair almost nobody had a real shot at, so twenty years is the gap being closed. What makes it worth a second look now is what happened after it landed. The shoe has traded 17,651 times on StockX in three months and is still clearing above retail, a combination that usually does not survive that kind of volume.

The Air Jordan 5 arrived in February 1990, designed by Tinker Hatfield, and Jordan Brand’s own history of the model explains where the strange parts came from. Hatfield likened it to an American World War II fighter plane, which is the origin of the shark-tooth shapes running along the midsole, paired with a clear outsole. The reflective tongue is Metallic Silver 3M. Secondary guides identify the plane as a P-51 Mustang, but Nike itself has never named the aircraft, so treat that detail as enthusiast attribution rather than brand record.

A correction on the brand history belongs here too. An earlier version of this post said Air Jordan was launched in 1984 around Michael Jordan’s professional career. Three claims are compressed into that sentence and all three are off. Jordan signed with Nike in 1984. The Air Jordan 1 reached stores in April 1985, designed by Peter Moore. Jordan Brand did not exist as a distinct Nike division until September 9, 1997, when it launched alongside the Air Jordan 13 and signed its first non-Jordan athletes. Thirteen years separate the signature line from the brand.

The Carolina reference is not enthusiast shorthand either, which the original version of this post hedged on unnecessarily. Nike’s own product name is Air Jordan 5 “Black Carolina” and Nike’s copy calls it a bringback of the 2006 ode to his time at Carolina. The official color string is Black and University Blue, on a premium black nubuck upper with an icy outsole, Metallic Silver 3M tongues and clear lace locks. It shipped in the MJ Face heritage box, which the 2006 original did not have. And it is the high, not the low, whatever the DD0587 code family looks like from the outside.

Jordan played three seasons at North Carolina, 1981-82 through 1983-84, and left with 1,788 points in 101 games at 17.7 a night on 54 percent shooting, National Player of the Year in both 1983 and 1984. The shot everyone reaches for came in his first year. March 29, 1982, in the Superdome, North Carolina 63 Georgetown 62, a 16-foot jumper with 15 seconds left, 16 points and a team-high 9 rebounds from a freshman. He said afterwards that he had pictured the game coming down to a last shot and had seen himself taking it.

The Air Jordan 5 is a different chapter of the same story, and it is the chapter that gives this colorway its weight. It came out in February 1990, so it covers the back half of a season in which Jordan averaged 33.6 points and led the league, and it is the shoe he wore in Cleveland on March 28, 1990 for the 69 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals that are still his career high. He had moved to the Air Jordan 6 by the time he won anything. That is the honest read on the 5. It is the last shoe before the rings, and the argument for it is the basketball rather than the trophies. Putting Carolina colors on it closes the loop at the other end.

$220 is dead centre for a 2026 Air Jordan 5 high. Wolf Grey in February was $220, White and Metallic Silver in April was $220, Sunset in September is $205 and the SoleFly collaboration in October is $225. Kids run $155 grade school, $95 little kids, $80 toddler. What separates this one is the market underneath it. Last sale $266 against a three-month average of $258, on 17,651 sales. Wolf Grey averaged $273 on 7,426. Grape, a far more famous colorway produced far deeper, sits at a $175 average against $215 retail, roughly $40 under. Jordan Brand made a great many Black Carolina and demand absorbed all of them, which is the rarer outcome.

Air Jordan 5 “Black Carolina”, style code DD0587-008, $220, released Friday June 20, 2026 through Nike SNKRS and a wide retail rollout including Foot Locker, JD Sports, Finish Line and Hibbett, with raffles at A Ma Maniére, Social Status, Sneaker Politics, Notre, Bodega and APB. Kids sizing ran the full family. It is sold out on Nike SNKRS and delisted from Nike search, so the secondary market is the only route now. One figure in circulation is wrong.
