Nike put the Vapor 12 Hypersmash “Mag” on nike.com on August 17 at $190 in style code HV1488-001, and it is gone. Nike’s own page for the colorway now reads “This color is currently unavailable,” and the only Hypersmash the brand still sells is the Gorge Green pair. It never appeared on SNKRS and never got a launch page. A hard court tennis shoe sold through the ordinary product catalog, which is not how Nike tennis releases usually end.
The shoe it is actually referencing
Hypersmash is not a separate tooling. It is the Vapor 12 chassis wearing a borrowed upper, and Nike’s product page names the source outright, calling out design details inspired by the 2008 Hyperdunk basketball shoe. The specific reference is narrower than that. The synthetic leather toe box, the mesh side panel, the debossed mini Swoosh half hidden on the medial side, the sculpted heel counter and the red to orange gradient on the tongue branding all point at the Hyperdunk Supreme “Marty McFly,” style code 333373-011, which released through Undefeated in 2008 in tiny numbers and has been out of reach since. This is the second Hypersmash to run the idea. The first, HJ0549-100, arrived in March 2025 in the Team USA colors the Hyperdunk took to Beijing.
The tribute stops where seventeen years of technology got in the way. There is no Flywire. The Vapor 12’s TPU cage wraps the midfoot instead, speckled in blue, doing the lockdown work Flywire used to do. The heel counter is shaped like the one on the Mag and the McFly Hyperdunk, and it neither lights up nor glows. The original Hyperdunk earned the callback on its own terms. Nike launched it on April 7, 2008 with Kobe Bryant fronting the announcement and Beijing as the stage, and it put Flywire and Lunarlite foam into a basketball shoe that weighed almost nothing for its era.
A correction the nickname keeps collecting
The Mag shorthand needs fixing wherever it appears, including in the earlier version of this post. The line that keeps traveling, the self-lacing Air Mag from Back to the Future Part II, folds three separate objects into one. The film is 1989. The first Mag Nike actually sold was the 2011 replica, 1,500 pairs, lit up but laced by hand, which raised close to $10 million in ten days for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. A self-lacing Mag did not reach a buyer until 2016, when 89 pairs went out by drawing and raised $6.7 million. Tinker Hatfield and Tiffany Beers are credited on both. The 2026 tennis shoe references a look, not a lacing system.
What $190 buys
Nike’s color string is Photon Dust, Wolf Grey, Sky Blue and White, with the white Swoosh outlined in photon dust. Inside there is a mesh sock liner with a slick finish and a standard insole carrying the NikeCourt logo. The midsole is unnamed EVA, firmer than a lifestyle foam because hard court eats outsoles, with a Zoom Air unit in the heel. Underneath, an aggressive herringbone splits forefoot and heel with a photon blue torsion plate between them and a Swoosh cutout exposing the foam. Nike publishes no weight and no offset for it, so none of this is a spec sheet. The packaging is part of the pitch: a hard front opening box built like the ones the real Air Mag releases came in, printed with a caution warning about extreme speed.
It arrived a day ahead of the Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 “Back to the US Open,” style code IX4084-025, which released August 18 at $170 and takes the more literal route to the same film. Tumbled grey leather, blue cutouts standing in for the Mag’s glowing outsole, an icy translucent bottom. Two shoes, one reference, and the tennis category carrying both of them rather than basketball.
Mike Guillory paid for his pair
Mike Guillory was not seeded this one. He missed the Nike drop and found a full size run at a tennis specialist afterward, and the enthusiasm in his breakdown is the enthusiasm of somebody who spent his own money and was relieved to land the pair. He calls it a contender for his favorite shoe of the year. He has walked in it and not played in it yet, and says the tongue padding is generous without being intrusive. On sizing, go true to size for length. The width runs narrow, so wide feet should go up half a size, and the same advice holds for the standard Vapor 12.
$190 sits at the top of Nike’s tennis range, and the comparison worth making is the same model in Gorge Green, HV1488-300, which Nike is currently marking down to $143.97 from that same $190. One colorway sold out at full price and the other is discounted, which is the clearest available read on how much of this demand came from tennis players and how much came from the reference. StockX shows the Mag averaging near $287 over three months with recent sales closer to $220. That is marketplace data rather than reporting.
