Westside Gunn’s sneaker work has always been an extension of his records, not a side hustle, and the new Saucony Grid Jazz 9 “Awesome God” makes that literal. The shoe is tied to his Flygod Is An Awesome God series, serving as a physical piece of the trilogy’s final chapter, which is a very Westside Gunn way to release a sneaker.

The execution matches the concept. The upper is built from multi-tone faux fur layered with iridescent leather paneling, and because of how those materials fall, Saucony says no two pairs come out identical. A custom scorpion sits embroidered in the heel window, one of the recurring motifs Gunn ties to his personal iconography. It is maximalist, a little strange, and unmistakably his, which is the point.
This is also a reminder of how far Saucony has come as a collaborator. A few years ago the brand was a runner’s secret. Now it is trusted enough that an artist as particular about aesthetics as Westside Gunn will build a whole release around one of its silhouettes. The Grid Jazz 9 is not for everyone, and it is not trying to be. It is a collector’s piece dressed as a running shoe.
