The KAI 3 "White Phantom" Honors a Mask Kyrie Irving Took Off Mid-Game

ANTA sends the KAI 3 “White Phantom” out on October 31, and the Halloween date is doing real work. The shoe is white from the collar to the outsole, with chrome accents that pull a full rainbow out of any light pointed at them, and ANTA has tied the whole release to Kyrie Irving’s masked stretch with Boston in 2017. The record of that stretch turns out to be stranger, and better, than the release copy suggests.

The KAI 3 is the third shoe in Irving’s ANTA signature line and the one the brand has leaned on hardest. ANTA’s own US store currently lists a dozen KAI 3 colorways, which is a Chinese release cadence rather than an American one, and the US has been getting a filtered version of it. The shoe itself is a low-cut guard model built around a sculpted lateral wing that wraps the forefoot and a full-length swirl traction pattern underneath. ANTA’s spec sheet keeps it plain: mesh, TPU and synthetic leather on the upper, rubber below. The KAI line has been built around the one part of Irving’s game nobody argues about, which is how fast he changes direction and how low he has to get to do it, and the KAI 3 is the first of the three that looks designed rather than assembled. What the line has really been about since the “Alchemist” landed at Dick’s and Scheels in September is distribution. ANTA keeps changing how an American buyer is supposed to get one, and every KAI 3 drop has arrived through a different door.

ANTA KAI 3

This one is the cleanest the shoe has looked. White runs across all three upper materials, so the only separation comes from texture, and the press frames are built to show that: the mesh reads as a fine jacquard, the synthetic leather panels sit matte against it, and the TPU wing catches light like wet chrome. ANTA’s release calls the accents silver. Up close they are iridescent, reading silver head-on and splitting into a rainbow the moment the shoe turns. The traction is a full-length swirl that looks more like a fingerprint than a herringbone, with a dark window set into the midfoot, and the lacing runs through stitched loops instead of punched eyelets. The campaign image puts butterflies around the shoe, which is a thread back to the KAI 2 “White Phantom” and the copy ANTA wrote for it about a butterfly threading chaos. Two different stories are now attached to the same colorway name.

ANTA KAI 3

The mask story deserves the correction. Irving took an elbow from teammate Aron Baynes on November 10, 2017 against Charlotte and fractured a bone in his face. He sat the next game, a win over Toronto that was Boston’s twelfth straight. He said he would wear a mask at Brooklyn on November 14 and might need it for a couple of weeks. Four nights later, against Golden State, he pulled the mask off in the middle of the game because it was cutting his peripheral vision, and Boston beat the defending champions by four. So ANTA has built a shoe around a piece of equipment its athlete discarded the first time it cost him a read. That is the more interesting version of the story, and it is closer to what the shoe is selling anyway: a guard who would rather see the whole floor than be protected from it. ANTA’s own copy reaches for mystery and disguise. The games themselves say the opposite, that the mask was an obstacle he worked around and then threw away, and a white shoe with nothing hidden on it fits that reading better than the ghost framing does.

ANTA keeps most KAI 3 colorways at $135 on its own store. “White Phantom” sits at $150, the tier the brand saves for its bigger swings, alongside the “Kai Feng” and the “Patchwork”. The comparison that lands harder is the KAI 2 “White Phantom”, still listed on anta.com at $100. Same colorway name, one model back, fifty dollars cheaper. Irving’s ANTA line arrived as the value argument in American basketball footwear, and $150 puts the KAI 3 where most signature shoes already live. The shoe is good enough to be worth it. The pitch is just no longer the price.

Distribution is the part to watch. ANTA lists exactly two places to buy this one, which is the same instinct that put the KAIBRID “Spades” into a single store earlier this month. For a brand trying to build American share, a gated Halloween drop is either confidence or caution, and ANTA has not settled which.

The ANTA KAI 3 “White Phantom” releases October 31 at $150 under product code 812641126-1, in white across a mesh, TPU and synthetic leather upper on a rubber outsole. ANTA names two points of sale: anta.com and the ANTA flagship at 330 N. Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills, the brand’s first store in the United States. The size run is already posted on anta.com and is not yet live for purchase.
