Nike opens SNKRS entries for the Ja 4 High on October 31, which is the first high-top Ja Morant has had in four signature shoes. It arrives as a red zippered shroud pulled over an entirely different shoe, and the pair you can see is not really the pair you are buying. Nike dates it for Halloween and builds the whole thing around a horror reference the release copy pointedly refuses to name.
Morant’s line has been low-cut from the start, and that was a position taken rather than a default. His game runs on acceleration and on getting off the floor from a standstill, and the first three models were built to keep mass away from the ankle so none of that got taxed. The Ja 4 continued it with a low collar, a Cushlon 3.0 midsole and the JA-Frame, a molded wrap that runs around the midfoot and holds the foot over the platform during a hard cut. It is a guard’s shoe in the oldest sense, built light and built to turn.
A high-top inside that brief is a genuine change of direction, and it is worth noting what Nike did not do. There is no new cushioning setup here and no restructured platform. The Cushlon 3.0 midsole, the rubber outsole and the JA-Frame all carry over, and the frame is still visible along the sides. What changed is everything above the foot, which means the Ja 4 High is a new upper on a known shoe rather than a fifth signature model arriving early.

That upper is a sculpted shroud with a zipper running up the collar, finished in a raised triangular texture that reads closer to scales than to mesh, with Morant’s triangle mark repeated across the surface. The zipper tape is branded CALL TWELVE. A metallic swoosh sits across the forefoot in an olive that does not appear anywhere else on the shoe, and a pull tab sits on the heel. The laces are underneath the shroud rather than on top of it, which is the detail that makes the thing work and the reason the silhouette looks sealed.
Open it and there is a second shoe under there in dark mesh with green trim, which Nike’s own product images show and its copy does not discuss. The sockliners carry a screaming face in green and purple. A mask drawn from the same illustration ships with the pair. Nike describes the design as inspired by one of Morant’s favorite movie characters, says it has haunted dreams for decades, and stops there, leaving the audience to fill in a name the brand has no licence to print.

The zippered shroud is not a new idea at Nike and the precedent is a good one. The Air Zoom Flight The Glove, built for Gary Payton, covered its lacing with a zip sleeve and became one of the most recognisable basketball shoes of its decade on the strength of that one decision. What is different here is the reason. The Glove shroud was about containment for a defender who spent his night in a crouch. This one is a costume, and it is the rare case where saying so is not a criticism, because a shoe that hides a second shoe under a skin is exactly the right object for the date Nike put on it.

The read on the timing is simpler than the design. Morant has been showing his own shoes before Nike announces them for most of this line’s run, and the Ja 4 High surfaced from him well before the brand dated it. A signature athlete leaking his own product used to be a problem for a marketing calendar. It is now the calendar. The KD19 Slim Reaper arriving a day earlier and the G.T. Cut 4 Halloween that follows in December are both pure Nike Basketball productions. This one reads like Morant’s.
Retail is $180, a forty dollar step up from the low-top Ja 4, which has run at $140 through its in-line colorways. That is a lot to add for an upper, and it is the most interesting number on the Halloween board for exactly that reason. The KD19 is $170 with a full-length Zoom Strobel under it. The Ja 4 High asks more for less cushioning technology and sells the difference on construction, which is a trade Nike has not often asked a signature line to make at this price.
The Nike Ja 4 High “Halloween” releases October 31 in University Red, Bright Crimson, Cobalt Bliss and Medium Olive, style code IQ3864-600, at $180. Entries open on SNKRS at 7 a.m. PT, with wider availability expected at Nike.com.
