The tarantula hawk is a wasp that hunts tarantulas, paralyzes them and leaves an egg behind. AFEW built a running shoe out of it. The Düsseldorf shop’s third Saucony collaboration lands on the ProGrid Omni 9 under the name “Tara Hawk,” live at AFEW now and reaching Saucony and select retailers on November 13. The insect is not a mood board reference the copy drops after the first line. It is the color plan, the material list, and the reason the orange sits where it does.
The Omni was Saucony’s stability line, built for runners whose arches rolled inward under load, and the ProGrid Omni 9 arrived at the back end of the stretch when ProGrid was the cushioning system under almost everything the brand sold. A medial post to resist that roll, a segmented crash pad at the heel, and a lot of overlays doing structural work rather than decorative work. It was a serious shoe for a specific foot, sold in running specialty stores to people who had been told by a gait analysis that they needed it, and it was never a shoe anyone collected.
becausesneakers made that argument in September, when Saucony’s Daikanyama capsule revived the same silhouette and the post called it the least collected shoe of its year. Two months later a second shop with its own point of view has reached past the Shadow 5000, the Grid Azura and the Jazz, the Saucony models that move on name recognition alone, and taken the Omni 9 instead. The logic there is structural rather than sentimental. The Omni 9 carries more separate panels, a wider midfoot cage and more visible hardware than a flat suede runner does, which gives a designer more surfaces to work on and more places to hide a detail. A shoe nobody is precious about is also a shoe nobody polices.

AFEW’s own copy names the tarantula hawk and describes the build as biological defense turned into something wearable. In the press images that reads as a dark graphite base under honeycomb mesh, with iridescent panels running the length of both sides and shifting between teal, violet and magenta depending on where the light lands. The two sides do not match. One gets a translucent cage over the midfoot. The other carries a thin teal outline tracing the Saucony logo and very little else, so the shoe reads loud from one angle and almost restrained from the other.
The collar is pony hair, which AFEW states plainly, and the heel holds a clear TPU window. Under the arch sits a custom orange TPU shank, and that orange is the wasp’s wing. Sneaker Bar Detroit described the orange as rubber underfoot. AFEW’s own product page calls it a shank, and on a question about the shoe’s own construction the brand side wins that one. The sockliners are pale teal carrying a concentric ripple graphic, shot outside the shoe in the press set rather than left for buyers to find. Three lace sets come in the box, and the box itself is iridescent.

Pony hair is turning into a Saucony collaboration signature rather than a one-off. The Space Cowboy ProGrid Triumph 4 used it at the end of September, and the Sweater Weather Paramount leaned on a boucle knit two weeks after that. The pattern holds across all three. Saucony keeps handing collaborators an archive runner nobody was fighting over and letting them solve the shoe with texture instead of with a logo. That is a cheaper bet than reissuing a grail, and on a brand still building its lifestyle business it is the bet that leaves room to miss.
AFEW lists the pair at 189.99 euros on its own store, where it is already available. The US figure reported by Sneaker Bar Detroit is $195, and it has not appeared on Saucony’s site yet because the shoe is not staged there until release day. For context, Saucony’s own ProGrid Omni 9 TMY carries a $165 regular price, so the AFEW pair sits roughly thirty dollars above a standard Omni 9 makeup. Resale history on this silhouette is thin, which is close to the whole reason a shop picks it. The Daikanyama pair never built a premium worth quoting.

The AFEW x Saucony ProGrid Omni 9 “Tara Hawk” is style code S71049-1 in Black/Multi-Color, and it is available now at AFEW in men’s and women’s sizing. Saucony and select retailers are reported to get it on November 13, with Saucony’s online launch set for 11 a.m. ET. That second date comes from Sneaker Bar Detroit rather than from Saucony, so treat it as unconfirmed until the brand posts the product page.
