Nike is bringing back the Air Rift 2 in a “Kenya” colorway on June 25, and this release carries real weight for a silhouette with a distinct origin story. The shoe lands with black mesh construction across the upper, dark green base layering, and Fire Red embroidered Swooshes on the outer toes, a combination that references the colors of Kenya’s flag and the geography that gave the original Air Rift its name.
Nike has been part of the sneaker conversation since the 1970s, building one of the most recognizable product catalogs in footwear history. The brand’s running line in particular has produced silhouettes that outlasted their original purpose and crossed into everyday wear, and the Air Rift is one of the cleaner examples of that arc.
The original Air Rift arrived in 1995 as part of Nike’s running category, built around the idea of mimicking barefoot movement. Its most recognizable feature is a Tabi-style split toe, which creates a separation between the big toe and the rest of the foot. A specially engineered sole was designed to replicate the sensation of running unshod while still delivering cushioning and support. The shoe drew direct inspiration from Kenya’s Rift Valley and the barefoot runners associated with the region. This June 25 release is the first retro reissue of the Air Rift 2 specifically, and Nike revealed it through their SNKRS Verified content series, a format that replaced earlier live video unveilings.
The “Kenya” makeup uses two types of mesh construction across the upper, pairing the dark green base with black side panel overlays. The Fire Red stitching on the toe Swooshes ties the colorway back to the shoe’s Kenyan heritage and the barefoot runners who first inspired the design, making it one of the more intentional colorways in recent Nike running history.
