Nike’s Mind 002 Puts 22 Foam Nodes Under Your Foot

Nike's Mind 002 Puts 22 Foam Nodes Under Your Foot

Nike released the Mind 002 in Pink Smoke on July 23, in women’s sizing, and the colorway is worth the attention less for how it looks than for what it is attached to. The Mind line is Nike‘s neuroscience footwear project, and the numbering on it does not mean what it appears to mean. This post previously carried a 2025 release date, which is impossible, because the line did not exist until January 2026.

Nike Mind 002 Pink Smoke

Nike’s own framing of Mind is unusually specific for a lifestyle launch. The newsroom calls it a sensory-footwear concept that helps reawaken the foot, the body and the mind, and the first neuroscience-based footwear from Nike, built to tap the mind-body connection by activating sensory receptors in the feet. The mechanism is 22 independent foam nodes in each shoe, which Nike says have been scientifically shown to activate key sensory areas of the brain through underfoot stimulation. The research behind it ran more than a decade and used EEG, electromyography and pressure sensors, with node placement mapped to mechanoreceptor density, producing what Nike describes as alpha oscillations associated with relaxed alertness. Eric Avar, the brand’s VP and creative director of innovation, led the concept and has called it a new paradigm of performance. Erling Haaland tested it. Nike files both models on its own site as Pregame Shoes, designed for pregame and activated by walking.

The numbering is where the coverage goes wrong, and this post went with it. Mind 001 and Mind 002 are not a sequence. They launched on the same day in January and they are two constructions of the same idea. Nike’s own line is that the 001 mule offers easy-on, easy-off convenience and comfort while the 002 sneaker anchors the foot to the footbed for increased sensation and support. So the $50 between them is a difference in build, not a price increase between generations, and anyone reading the 002 as a successor to the 001 has the relationship backwards. The pairing runs all the way down to this drop, because a Mind 001 in Pink Smoke, HQ4309-601, released the same day. The line itself launched on January 8, six months before this colorway, which is the cleanest proof that the 2025 date this post used to carry could not have been right.

Whether any of the neuroscience holds up is a question for people with the equipment to test it, and Nike is not asking anybody to take it on faith so much as asking them to walk around in it. What is easier to judge is the commercial read. Nike has spent two years being told its problem is a shortage of new ideas, and a footwear category built on sensory stimulation rather than cushioning or traction is at least an answer to that. It is also a category with no competition in it, which is worth more to Nike right now than another retro would be.

Nike Mind 002 Pink Smoke

Pink Smoke is Nike’s own name rather than an outlet nickname, and the full Colour Shown string reads Pink Smoke/Mystic Dates/Light Magenta/Metallic Silver. The build is a knit upper with engineered perforations, the 22 nodes underfoot that move up and down against the foot, a plush foam midsole, a stretchy fabric footbed, moulded foam on the heel and the tongue, and rubber pods at the toe and heel for traction. There is a heel pull tab. Nike’s Mind 001 page carries the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance. Worth naming what Nike has not said: it has never positioned Mind against its own recovery footwear, and it describes the line instead as a completely new category of products and services, which is a larger claim and a harder one to check.

Retail on the 002 is $145 against $95 for the 001. As market data, StockX shows a last sale of $183 on this colorway, a three-month average of $176 and 40 sales, so it has been moving above retail on low volume. The Black Chrome 002 is the useful comparison, with 267 sales in the same window, which suggests Pink Smoke is a narrower pair rather than a soft one. One note for anyone chasing this line: Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Mind 001 and 002 work from March is explicitly labelled by Nike as Fragment Concept Testing rather than a collaboration, and no collaborator is attached to Pink Smoke at all.

The release date was July 23, reported by Sneaker Bar Detroit and corroborated by two other outlets, and Nike’s own product page carries no date, so this one is Tier 2 rather than brand-confirmed. StockX lists 01/01/2026 in its release field, which is a platform placeholder and not reporting. The style code is HQ4310-600, retail is $145, and it released in women’s sizing. Nike.com and Dick’s Sporting Goods both carried it.
