JJJJound and New Balance are back together on the New Balance 740N, a Paper White and Stoneware take on the runner that runs through the Montreal studio’s usual restraint.
JJJJound, the design studio led by Justin Saunders, has spent years turning archival New Balance runners into pared-back, tonal collector pieces, most famously across the 990 and 992. Moving to the 740, a chunkier late-90s style, gives the partnership a heavier silhouette to work with while keeping the muted, no-logo-drama approach that defines the studio’s output.
Choosing the 740 rather than another 99X model shows both sides willing to push past the shoes that made the collaboration famous. For New Balance, handing a lesser-known runner to JJJJound is a way to build interest in deeper cuts from the archive, and the Paper White and Stoneware palette keeps the release firmly in grail-hunting territory for people who follow the studio closely.
The shoe surfaced first through JJJJound’s own channels before this wider, still limited push through New Balance, so demand is already set before it reaches a broader audience.
