Air Force 1 ’01 University Red Was Meant to Launch in Harlem, Not Online

Steven Victor’s Victor Victor imprint put its name on the Air Force 1 ’01 in University Red, and the original plan was to hand the first pairs over in person. Nike and the label had a Harlem activation set for the morning of September 12. That in-person piece was called off and the release moved online the same day, which is a small change with a large consequence. This is the first Victor Victor Nike shoe that anyone outside a pop-up line could actually buy.

The Air Force 1 arrived in 1982, designed by Bruce Kilgore, and Nike still credits it in its own voice as the first basketball shoe built around Nike Air. The part that matters here is the suffix. Nike sells the shoe in more than one build, and the ’01 is a reissue of the specification it carried at the turn of the century rather than the ’07 most people have owned. Nike’s own launch copy for the line describes a slimmer toe box and a thick leather upper that bring back what it calls a premium nostalgic feel. Enthusiast comparisons add the rest of the differences, all of them real and all of them small: heavier leather, more padding at the collar, a curved heel where the ’07 squares it off. Nike left that build almost entirely to collaborators for years, so the ’01 designation now reads as a signal in itself. When a partner gets it instead of the ’07, the brand is treating the project as something more than a color swap. The Nike in-house calendar has barely touched it.

This pair is red leather over a white midsole with black at the Swoosh and the heel, built on that ’01 last and carrying the style code IV3238-600. It is not a technical exercise and it does not pretend to be one. Victor Victor is a record label, not a design house, and the shoe reads like a label mark dropped onto the most requested color story the Air Force 1 has. Steven Victor has been in the room for a long stretch of what this silhouette actually means. He started out as a publicist for Clipse in 2004, moved into A&R at G.O.O.D. Music, ran A&R at Def Jam as an executive vice president from 2017, and now heads Victor Victor Worldwide inside Universal, where he signed Pop Smoke and helped set up Nigo’s comeback record. The label’s first Nike shoe, an all-white Air Force 1 with a Tosa dog on the heel, was tied to Nigo’s I Know NIGO Too! pop-up in New York in September 2024 and never had a general release at all. This is the version with a real run behind it.

Nike has spent 2026 handing the ’01 to outside partners rather than running it in-house, and the Victor Victor set is the widest example so far. Six colorways is a lot to give a label with one prior shoe to its name, and the sequencing says how Nike is reading it. University Red and Yellow Zest went first. That is a rollout built for sell-through, not scarcity, and it is a different bet than the 2024 pop-up pair, which existed to be photographed. The read is that Nike is spending music-executive credibility the way it used to spend athlete credibility, and doing it on the safest canvas it owns. University Red on an Air Force 1 does not need a story to move. Whether that is confidence or caution depends on how the stranger colorways land later in the run.

Retail is $150. That is the going rate for an Air Force 1 collaboration in 2026 rather than a premium. The A Few Good Kids ’01 is $150 for holiday, and Nike’s own LA All-Star Air Force 1 in February was $160. It sits roughly $25 to $35 above a general-release Air Force 1 Low, which is where the heavier leather and the ’01 tooling go. Every pair in the Victor Victor run carries the same number, which is worth noting, because collections staged like this one usually push the later and louder colorways higher. The Air Force 1 ’01 NYC sat at the same tier earlier this year.

Release details: out now, released September 12, 2026, style code IV3238-600, $150. The Harlem activation set for 10 a.m. Eastern that morning was cancelled and the drop moved to a midday online release, with a wider rollout following September 17.
