Jack Harlow explained this shoe himself three days before it came out, and almost every write-up since has moved it to the wrong state. “Louisville’s park system is one of my hometown’s greatest assets,” he told Highsnobiety. “I spent a lot of my adolescence killing time with friends in Cherokee Park, a 400-acre space that intertwines with the Highlands neighborhood I grew up in.” That is the entire brief, and there is no second city in it.
The outlets got there by way of a famous name. Frederick Law Olmsted designed Central Park in New York, so when Harlow listed the Louisville parks Olmsted drew, and the list included a Central Park, the headlines turned the shoe into a bridge between his hometown and the city he lives in now. One of them said so in the headline. Louisville has its own Central Park. It is one of seventeen parks in the system Olmsted was commissioned to design there in 1891, along with six parkways, and Harlow named Cherokee, Shawnee and Iroquois in the same breath. He was talking about Kentucky the whole time.
What Olmsted built in Louisville is worth knowing on its own terms. It is one of only four Olmsted-designed park systems anywhere, and the idea behind it was structural rather than decorative: a network of parks joined by tree-lined parkways instead of the standalone parks everyone else was building. Cherokee is the flagship on the east side. A kid growing up in the Highlands in the 2000s was using nineteenth century civic infrastructure as a place to be bored with his friends, which is a more interesting origin for a shoe than a mood board.
He picked the canvas deliberately too. “I was already a fan of the T500 as a model,” he said, “and I liked the idea of a walking shoe that isn’t completely sporty and still feels dressy enough to wear to something like a nice dinner.” The T500 is a real 1982 New Balance tennis shoe, revived in 2023 when Aimé Leon Dore pulled it out of the archive, and worked since by AURALEE. It is a model whose modern identity was built almost entirely by fashion labels, which makes this the first time it has been asked to carry somebody’s childhood.
The colour came from the record. “From the moment I started recording, the colour brown felt very compatible with my new album, Monica,” he said. “The sheen on the leather gives the shoe a subtle elevation that brought it home for me.” The build is quiet by design: wrinkled brown leather, brown laces, a matching midsole, no tongue tag, an inset N on the sidewalls and a tonal NB embroidered at the heel. One outlet describes the upper as synthetic while two others call it leather, so the material is not settled.
A small correction while we are here. Harlow did not sign with New Balance in 2023, as one release site has it. The brand announced him as an ambassador on February 17, 2022, and its chief marketing officer Chris Davis called him a rising star and an authentic fan of the brand in the release. Harlow’s line that day was simply that he had been wearing New Balance since he was a kid.
Four and a half years of that deal have produced three things you could buy: a friends and family 550 pack in 2022, the 1906R Rose Runner at $180 in October 2024, and a 442 indoor soccer shoe with his high school number on the tongue and a gold map of his Louisville neighborhood on the insole. That is a slow cadence, and it reads as patience rather than neglect. This is the first release in nearly two years.
Retail is $130, which is exactly what Aimé Leon Dore’s T500 carried in 2023. Three years and no price creep on the model, and no collaboration premium on this one either. That puts Harlow at the same tier New Balance reserves for its fashion partners rather than at celebrity pricing, and it is the clearest signal in the release of how the brand sees him.

New Balance put the first pairs out at a free pop-up at Hogan’s Fountain in Cherokee Park on August 28, with the wide release following September 4 through newbalance.com. No third party stockists have been named. New Balance issued no press release for it, which means everything above that is not Harlow’s own words comes from release reporting. The Olmsted Parks Conservancy has said nothing about the shoe, and there is no indication of a donation attached to it.
