FC Barcelona x Nike Kobe Dunk Low Protro Promotes an Admirer Into a Supporter

When Kobe Bryant died in January 2020, FC Barcelona published an obituary that called him an admirer of the club. It was a careful word and an accurate one. By July 2025, when the club announced a commercial partnership with the Kobe brand, he had been promoted. The new language read that the NBA star “was a supporter of the Club.” By the time the 2026-27 away kit arrived, biography had been dropped entirely in favour of shared values. This shoe is the third step in that sequence.

The documented record is real and it is narrower than the marketing. Barcelona’s own obituary lists the encounters: Bryant met the football team in Los Angeles in 2006 and visited a training session in Catalonia a few months later, stopped by the team hotel in Washington in 2011, saw them again on the 2015 United States tour, and met the club in Haikou in 2017. Two basketball games bracket it. Barça played the Lakers at Staples Center in October 2008 and lost, and the Lakers played at the Palau Sant Jordi in October 2010 and lost 92 to 88 to the football club’s basketball team, with Bryant on the floor for the last five minutes of it.

Six encounters across eleven years, most of them on Barcelona’s American tours, is a genuine acquaintance. It is not lifelong fandom, and the club did not claim it was in 2020. The only football club documented as Bryant’s own, from his childhood in Italy, is AC Milan.

Now the shoe, which has its own naming problem. Every outlet is calling it a Kobe Dunk Low Protro. Nike is not. Its live product pages for sibling colorways of this model read Dunk Low Protro, with no Kobe in the name at all, and the copy roots the shoe in the original Dunk rather than in anything Bryant wore. Nike’s own benefits list names real and synthetic leather and no cushioning technology whatsoever. Protro here is a Kobe-line naming convention, not evidence of Kobe tooling.

That matters because there is no heritage Kobe Dunk to revive. Bryant signed with adidas in 1996 and reportedly paid around $8 million to leave that deal in 2002. He did not join Nike until 2003. The Kobe Dunk Low Protro is new, with its first retail pairs arriving in March this year, a year after the Kobe Air Force 1 Protro. Anything framing this as a return of a shoe Kobe wore is inventing history.

What it is instead is the output of a restructured business, and the club said so out loud. Nike and Barcelona have been together since 1998, and in November 2024 they signed a new agreement that members ratified that December, 419 votes to 27. Joan Laporta told those members it “frees up commercial assets that FC Barcelona will be able to develop through its subsidiary BLM.” The Kobe partnership, announced the following July and running three seasons to 2027-28, is the first original product line off that machine. Reporting has valued the wider Nike agreement at up to €1.7 billion across fourteen seasons.

One detail in that partnership is genuinely striking and has been under-reported. On the 2025-26 second kit, Nike replaced its own Swoosh with Kobe’s Sheath logo. A company that has spent sixty years building the most valuable mark in sport took it off a Barcelona shirt and put a dead basketball player’s logo there instead. Whatever you think of the Kobe-Barcelona narrative, that is a real decision with real money behind it.

The shoe follows the kit palette rather than inventing one. Black leather through the base with patent leather on the toe, eyelets and heel, Field Purple on the Swoosh, the heel strip and a translucent outsole, and small gold hits. The tongues are split across the pair, one carrying Kobe’s Sheath logo and the other the Barcelona crest, both in gold, with his signature stitched across the back of each shoe and more Sheath logos on the insoles. The 26-27 away kit it matches runs black fading to purple with gold detailing, a snakeskin pattern and a line hidden inside the collar: leave the game better than you found it.

Style code is IV7508-001 and retail is $135, both carried by release reporting and by UNDEFEATED in Japan, which listed it for September 4 through SNKRS and select retailers. Neither Nike nor Barcelona has published anything about this specific shoe, it does not appear on nike.com or the Barcelona store now, and no official retailer list ever existed. The club store does carry a Kobe 3 Low Protro and a Kobe Air Force 1 in the same programme at higher prices. Treat every figure here as reporting rather than brand confirmed.
