New Balance 1300 “Sea Salt” Puts Croc-Embossed Pigskin on the Made in USA Flagship

New Balance has the 1300 “Sea Salt” down for September 10, the second release in a Made in USA season that runs through the rest of the year. It is the only 1300 in the lineup, which matters more than it sounds, because the 1300 is not a shoe New Balance brings out casually.

The 1300 arrived in 1985 at $130, a number that read as absurd for a running shoe at the time and became the shoe’s whole identity. New Balance built it as a no-compromise flagship and priced it accordingly, and the market decided that was either arrogance or proof. It turned out to be proof. New Balance leaned into the scarcity, reissuing the original at roughly five-year intervals rather than keeping it in the line, and the Japanese market turned those drops into events. The 1300JP became the reference point, the version collectors measure every other 1300 against. The 1300 developed a following that has never really thinned, helped along by a Japanese collector culture that treated the model as canon, and by New Balance’s habit of reissuing the original in five-year intervals rather than flooding it. That restraint is why a 1300 release still registers. The silhouette itself is the Boston brand’s high-water mark for the era, an ENCAP midsole under a suede and mesh upper, built at the Massachusetts and Maine factories that carry the Made in USA designation. ENCAP is the detail that dates it accurately, an EVA core ringed by a polyurethane rim, which was New Balance’s answer to the problem of foam that felt good for a month and then gave up.

This one puts the work into texture rather than color. The overlays, the N logos and the backtab are cut from embossed pigskin with a reptilian, croc-like grain, the sort of detail that disappears at arm’s length and only pays off in the hand. Sea Salt covers most of the shoe, New Balance’s off-white that has become shorthand for the Made in USA program. Blue Oyster picks out the N and the backtab. Inside, a maroon Mulled Wine lining supplies the one loud note, and it is hidden until the shoe is off the foot.

The read here is that New Balance has stopped trying to make Made in USA exciting and started letting it be expensive-looking instead. Teddy Santis has been running this line since 2021, and the early seasons leaned on colorways with obvious hooks. This one is an off-white shoe with a texture you have to look for. That is a confident position for a program that no longer needs to argue for itself, and it suits the 1300 specifically, since the model’s appeal was never about a story on the upper. It was about the build.

Worth knowing what “Made in USA” actually commits to here, because the phrase gets used loosely. New Balance applies it only where the domestic value of the shoe is at least 70 percent, and the shoes are assembled at the company’s factories in Massachusetts and Maine. That is a genuinely unusual arrangement in 2026. Almost nobody else at this scale still runs domestic footwear manufacturing, and the cost of it is most of the reason a Made in USA pair carries the price it does. The 1300 has been the clearest expression of that argument since 1985, which is why it gets used sparingly rather than colored in every season.

Pricing has not been announced, which is worth flagging rather than filling in. For context on where it will probably land, the same Made in USA season put the 990v4 out at $195 and the 993 at $200 on September 3, and the 1300 has historically sat at or above the top of that range. Anyone budgeting for this should assume the high end rather than the middle. Resale has never been the point with this model either. Made in USA 1300s tend to sell through at retail and then sit quietly rather than spike, which is the behaviour of a shoe bought to wear.

The New Balance 1300 “Sea Salt” is style code U1300SS in Sea Salt with Blue Oyster and Mulled Wine, arriving September 10 through New Balance and select retailers. The rest of the Made in USA season brings fresh takes on the 990v4, 992 and 993 in the weeks ahead. For more from the brand, see our New Balance coverage.
