Nike Air Zoom Flight The Glove Returns in Royal Blue as the Zipper Becomes a Trend Again

Nike is bringing the Air Zoom Flight The Glove back again, months after the last one, this time in royal blue. Style JA3823-463 is listed at $170 for the holiday window, the same number the black pair carried when it arrived on July 31. The shoe has spent most of the last twenty-eight years as a curiosity that people brought up in arguments about the strangest basketball designs Nike ever shipped. It is coming back into a market that has quietly decided the zipper was right all along.

The model released in 1998 as the Zoom Flight ’98, and the name it carries now comes from Gary Payton, whose on-ball defense in Seattle earned him the nickname. The construction is the whole story. A zippered shroud covers the entire upper and runs over an inner bootie, so the lacing disappears and the shoe closes like a piece of outerwear rather than a sneaker. Underneath it Nike used Zoom Air and a rigid shank plate through the midfoot, which is what made it a functioning basketball shoe rather than a styling exercise. Nothing else on a 1998 shelf looked like it, and nothing since has copied it exactly, because the shroud has to be engineered as the shoe rather than added to one. That is also why it never became a staple. A shoe with no visible laces is difficult to sell in volume, and Nike has brought it back only occasionally in the decades since, never often enough for it to feel common.

Royal blue covers the shrouded upper almost completely on this pair. A white Swoosh curves across the toe from the lateral side, a second white Swoosh sits on the lateral heel at the midsole, and white detailing picks out the strap that secures the top of the zipper. The rear pull tabs read THE GLOVE. In the photos that have surfaced, the collar lining runs dark, the midsole edge stays white, and the outsole carries a blue traction pattern rather than the translucent finish these retros sometimes get. Worth noting for anyone reading the color as a nod to Payton’s Seattle years, royal blue was not a SuperSonics color, and this makeup has no team logic behind it. The photos in circulation are early in-hand shots rather than official Nike imagery, so small details could still change before it ships.

The timing is the read. Hidden lacing has become a design language over the past year, showing up on the Air Max 95 Zip, on adidas basketball with the Don Issue 7, and on the Converse SHAI 001, which built a whole signature line around a shroud. The Glove predates every one of them by more than two decades, and it did the idea more completely than any of them do now, because it hid the laces rather than covering them partway. Nike putting out two colorways of a model it usually ignores inside a single year is the brand noticing that the shape it could not sell in 1998 is the shape everybody is designing toward in 2026.

At $170 it undercuts most of what it is shelved next to. Air Jordan retros are running $205 to $220 this month, and Nike’s basketball retro program generally prices above this. The $170 band is where Nike puts models it expects to sell through on interest rather than hype, and the July pair did sell through, which is the only real demand signal available for a shoe with almost no recent resale history. Anyone treating this as an investment should be careful. Two releases in one year is how a model stops being scarce, and Nike has shown before that it will keep pressing a retro while the interest holds rather than protecting the resale market around it.
