Nike Vomero Premium Black and White Is the First One With No Color Story to Sell

The Nike Vomero Premium lands on SNKRS on September 11 in Black and White, style code IU2827-001, at $230. It is the fifth Vomero Premium colorway becausesneakers has covered since June, and $230 is the same number Nike put on the Cucumber Calm in June and the Black Volt Glow in July. What is different is the pair itself. Every Vomero Premium before this one arrived with a color doing the selling. This one arrives with none, which makes it the first clean look at what $230 is actually buying.

The Vomero name has carried Nike’s cushioned neutral trainer through many generations, the shoe you buy when you want foam under you rather than a race result. It became something else entirely when the Vomero 5 crossed into lifestyle and turned a plain daily trainer into one of the most recognizable silhouettes of the last few years. The Premium is not a retro of any of that. It is a current build sitting at the top of the family, and Nike is specific about why it costs what it costs. Two Air Zoom units sit inside a ZoomX foam midsole, the same foam Nike puts in its racing shoes, and Nike calls the result its most comfortable ride for everyday road runs. Whatever anyone makes of the price, the parts list is not padding. Two Zoom units and a full ZoomX midsole is a combination Nike does not put in a $140 trainer, and the shoe is heavier and taller than the daily runners sitting under it in the line.

Black and White is a plainer shoe than the name promises. The upper is a black engineered mesh with a grey Swoosh laid over it, and the midsole is white ZoomX flecked with black speckle running the full length of the sidewall. The outsole is a black rubber pod layout under the forefoot and heel with the foam left exposed between. From above the pair reads almost entirely black, and the white only shows once you drop to eye level. The speckle is the detail worth pointing at, because it is the only decoration anywhere on the shoe. Nike calls the design monochromatic, which is generous. A speckled midsole is an old running cue, and putting it on the one Vomero Premium without a color story is Nike making sure the shoe still reads as a runner rather than a lifestyle object. Strip the speckle out and this becomes a very expensive black sneaker with nothing announcing what is inside it, which is a problem when the whole argument for the price sits in the midsole.

Five colorways in three months is a real commitment to a shoe at this price, and $230 has held across the ones we have prices for. That is unusual. The normal pattern is a premium launch makeup followed by cheaper general releases, and it has not happened here. Nike is treating $230 as the Vomero Premium’s price rather than an opening position. Black and White is the pair that tests whether that holds. Cucumber Calm and Black Volt Glow sold on color. A black shoe with a white midsole has to compete on what it does, against every other cushioned trainer in the $160 to $200 band and against Nike’s own line. If the Premium holds at $230 in a plain makeup, Nike has built a genuine tier above its daily trainers. If it does not, the earlier colorways were the whole business.

The price context is worth laying out, because it is the most useful thing anyone can tell you about this shoe. $230 has been the number since June, on the Black Volt Glow in July and the Cucumber Calm in June. Nike’s own Pegasus Plus 2 came in at $170 last week and covers a large share of the same use case. Inside this same release week Nike is putting out the Air Max Dolce at $170 and the Rift 2 at $125, so the Vomero Premium is close to twice the price of the cheapest thing on the calendar. In the wider market $230 sits alongside plated race shoes rather than daily trainers, which is an odd neighborhood for something Nike sells for everyday road runs.
