Converse SHAI 001 Shroud Hides the Colorway Under a Zipper and Asks $140

Converse has two colorways of the SHAI 001 Shroud loaded on SNKRS for September 24 at 7 a.m., both at $140. “Spark” carries style code A23976C-084 and “Shock” is A23975C-004. The build is the SHAI 001 with a zip panel laid across the lacing, and the idea behind it is that the shoe has two states. Closed, it is close to colorless. Open, a second color comes out from underneath. It is the first version of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s signature that changes depending on what the wearer decides to do with it.

The SHAI 001 is Gilgeous-Alexander’s first signature shoe and the first signature basketball model Converse has fielded in decades. It reached the general public on September 4, 2025, and Converse still lists the base low top at $130 on its own site. The line has not slowed down since. Converse has run it through a Premium Ox, a Lace Up build and a long stretch of colorways, enough that this site has now covered eight of them.

What has held across every one of those is restraint. The SHAI 001 is low, rounded and close to seamless, carrying less branding than almost anything else in signature basketball. That reads as a decision rather than an oversight, and it tracks with the player. Gilgeous-Alexander’s game is built on control, angles and pace rather than on force, and the shoe was drawn to match instead of to shout. Converse describes the look for this release as composure and restraint, which is unusual marketing language in that it actually describes the object.

The Shroud lays that zip panel over the top of the foot and covers the lacing completely. The zipper is short and sits between the two halves of the shroud, so the panel opens like a flap rather than splitting the upper. Zipped, “Spark” is nearly monochrome, an off-white molded upper over a grey sculpted midsole and a white outsole, with the only break a small yellow tab at the collar. Unzip it and the interior turns out to be yellow through the tongue and lining, with the same yellow set into the outsole as a circle under the forefoot. “Shock” runs the identical construction in black with volt green in all of the same places, the tab, the lining and the outsole circle. The two share adjacent style codes, A23975C and A23976C, which is how Converse tends to number a pair built as one release rather than two.

Hidden linings are an old trick and zippers on basketball shoes are older still, and the site has already noted that the zipper is back in rotation across Nike basketball. What the Shroud does with it is slightly different. Most signature shoes solve personal expression through colorways, which means the brand decides and the buyer picks off a menu. This one hands over a switch. It is a small amount of agency and it is more than most shoes offer.

The timing is the more interesting part. This line has been running under a question mark for months, and the site treated the Lace Up “Cheetah” in early September as one of the last Converse releases before Gilgeous-Alexander moves to Nike. A $140 variant with new tooling on it is not what a brand ships while it runs out the clock on an endorsement. Whatever the contract situation turns out to be, Converse is still spending on the shoe.

$140 puts the Shroud $10 above the $130 Converse lists for the base SHAI 001 and $20 above the $120 the Lace Up “Cheetah” carried on September 3. A zip shroud is real tooling and a real material addition, so a $10 step is modest by the standards of how brands usually price a variant. It also keeps the line under the $200 Nike charges for the GT Future and well clear of the value tier. For a first signature in its second year, holding a $120 to $140 spread across three builds is disciplined. Converse has not used the line’s visibility as an excuse to move the number.
