Nike gave the Caitlin 1 its official unveil on September 14, months after the shoe started showing up on Caitlin Clark’s feet. It launches globally on October 1 and lands in China a week earlier, on September 24. The date is not the story. The story is that Nike built a new upper construction for a first signature shoe, and that the launch colorway has a name most of the feeds have been getting wrong, including a post on this site in June.
Clark’s line arrives into a Nike basketball category that has been slow to build women’s signatures. Sabrina Ionescu’s line is the template and, until now, effectively the whole category, so the Caitlin 1 is not a debut into an established genre so much as the second entry in one Nike is still building. It also arrives sized the way a signature line should be from the start. Nike lists the Caitlin 1 in men’s, big kids’ and little kids’ sizing, with what the brand calls kid-right adjustments to flexibility and range of motion rather than a shrunken adult pattern. That matters for a player whose audience skews younger than anyone else’s in the league, and it is the kind of decision that usually waits until a second or third model proves the first one sold. Our earlier first look at the shoe had none of this.

The construction is called Nike Opticast, and the Caitlin 1 is its debut. Cast polyurethane nodes sit across the upper at varying heights, meant to cut drag and hold the foot without the weight of a traditional cage, and Nike says the pattern was drawn from the ripple of the three-point arc. Underneath, a forefoot Air Zoom Turbo unit pairs with a Cushlon midsole. The personal details are dense. The Opticast nodes form a run of C’s along the lateral side and repeated 2s along the medial, for her jersey number. Stacked Swooshes and a CC logo on the tongue play on her initials. The sock liner carries a cement texture pulled from the driveway court she grew up shooting on, and the outsole is printed with “Shoot More Threes,” “From Anywhere” and “It Was Never a Long Shot.”
Handing a brand-new upper construction its first outing on a women’s basketball signature, rather than on a men’s flagship or a running silhouette, is the loudest thing Nike did here. Opticast is a manufacturing bet, and the shoe it debuts on is where Nike expects the attention to be. The naming is a smaller signal pointing the same way. Nike calls the launch colorway Caitlin Blue, not Racer Blue, which is the name the release calendars have been carrying and the one we used in June. A brand that names a colorway after the athlete instead of after the pigment is positioning her as the property.

The China date is the part worth watching. September 24 in China, October 1 everywhere else, and Nike offers no explanation for the gap in its release. A week is not a rounding error on a signature launch, and the obvious reading is that Nike expects a meaningful share of first-week volume to come from a market where Clark has never played a game. Nike has also been unusually patient with this shoe, letting it appear on court and on other people’s feet for months before saying a word about the tech.
Nike prices the Caitlin 1 at $140 in North America. On Nike.com right now the Sabrina 4 lists at $135, the Tatum 4 at $130 and the Ja 4 at $130, which puts Clark’s first signature above every one of them. First signatures usually come in at or below the house rate, because the brand is buying volume and the athlete has no sales history to argue with. Nike went the other way and priced the Caitlin 1 like a proven line. The $5 gap over the Sabrina 4 is small in dollars and not small in what it says about who Nike thinks is carrying the category.

The Nike Caitlin 1 releases September 24 in China and October 1 globally at Nike.com and select Nike Basketball retailers, priced at $140 in North America. The Caitlin Blue launch pair carries style code IH7423-400 and comes in men’s, big kids’ and little kids’ sizing, alongside an 18-piece apparel collection releasing the same day.
