The KAI 3 “Kai Feng” has been a shoe American buyers could read about and not buy. ANTA closes that gap on October 3, when the colorway finally reaches the United States. It is the busiest upper Kyrie Irving has put his name on, carrying traditional Chinese kite imagery alongside the Thunderbird and feather motifs that come out of Irving’s own tribal heritage. Two symbol systems sharing one basketball shoe, and ANTA made no attempt to sand either of them down into something neutral.
The KAI 3 is the third signature model in a partnership that reset Irving’s commercial life and, with considerably less noise, reset how much attention ANTA gets outside China. Irving signed a five-year deal with the brand in 2023 and was named its chief creative officer, a title that usually means very little and in this case has produced a line moving at an unusual speed. The KAI 1, the KAI 1 Speed and the KAI 2 all arrived inside that window, and the KAI 3 alone has run through ten colorways on ANTA’s own store this year.
The shoe underneath all of it is a guard’s shoe, low cut and built for a player whose game is almost entirely changes of direction. What separates the KAI line from its competition is not the tooling, though. It is the naming. ANTA ships these as “Mastery,” “Mother’s Love,” “Magnetic Energy,” “432HZ” and “Alchemist” rather than as team colors, and that habit is most of the reason American buyers who had never considered an ANTA basketball shoe now follow the release calendar at all. Ten colorways in ten months is a release rate closer to a lifestyle model than to a signature basketball shoe, and it is the clearest signal of how hard ANTA is working to keep this line in front of American buyers.

ANTA’s account of the design starts with the kite. Traditional Chinese kites carry centuries of symbolism around chasing something, rising past a limit and moving freely, and the brand built the colorway out of that idea rather than around a single graphic. The Thunderbird worked into the artwork is the other half, drawn from Irving’s tribal heritage and standing, in ANTA’s description, for power and leadership. Feather motifs run alongside it for spiritual freedom and authenticity.
What that produces in practice is a shoe with almost no quiet surface. The upper is a dense print in reds, blues and cream, broken up by black line work, and it runs across the toe and down both sides rather than sitting as a single contained panel. The collar lining is a bright yellow that reads as a deliberate interruption when the shoe is seen from behind. The outsole stays white with red through the traction pattern, which is the one place the eye gets to rest. ANTA calls the overall register Eastern minimalism, and that is the one phrase in the release the photographs argue with.

The release pattern is the part worth watching. ANTA’s own announcement calls this a long-awaited arrival and describes it as landing stateside, which is a brand saying plainly that its American customers are served after everyone else. The retailer list makes the same point from another angle. The KAI 3 “Alchemist” went out through Dick’s and Scheels in September, which is about as mainstream as basketball distribution gets in the United States. “Kai Feng” is going to ANTA’s own channels, its Beverly Hills store, Shoe Gallery, Sneaker Politics and JD Canada instead.
Read one way, that is ANTA protecting a story colorway from landing on a big-box wall next to discounted team models. Read another way, it is a brand that still cannot get its best product into American stores at the scale its signature athlete deserves. Both have been true of this line at different points in the year, and the wider pattern of ANTA’s American rollout has carried the same mix of ambition and bottleneck since the partnership started.

Retail is $150, and the interesting part is that the KAI 3 has not had a single price this year. ANTA’s own store has run most of the line at $135, including “432HZ,” “Mastery,” “Triple Black,” “Mother’s Love,” “Magnetic Energy” and the “Alchemist” that landed last month. The $150 tier has been held back for the colorways carrying the heaviest narrative load, which so far means “KAI Mentality,” “Patchwork” and now “Kai Feng.” The gap is small enough that nobody walks away over it, and consistent enough across ten releases to read as policy rather than drift. The “Alchemist” that arrived last month sat in the lower tier, so a buyer following the line month to month is being asked for more this time without the shoe underneath changing at all.
The ANTA KAI 3 “Kai Feng” releases October 3 at $150 through ANTA.com, the ANTA Beverly Hills store, Shoe Gallery, Sneaker Politics and JD Canada. ANTA has not published a style code for the colorway, so anyone tracking this one by number is still waiting on the brand.
