The Gridiron Vomero Premium Puts Nike’s Brightest Midsole Under Its Darkest Upper

The Gridiron Vomero Premium Puts Nike’s Brightest Midsole Under Its Darkest Upper

Nike calls the Vomero Premium its most cushioned and most comfortable ride, and until now it has mostly shown it in colorways that let you see the engineering. The new Gridiron pair goes the other way. The upper is blacked out and patterned rather than panelled, the Swoosh is a tonal iridescent shape you only catch at an angle, and the single loud thing on the shoe is the midsole, a translucent blue slab that runs the full length and glows against everything above it. It is live at nike.com now in the full men’s size run.

The Vomero sits at the top of Nike’s cushioned road line rather than at the fast end of it, and the current lineup makes that position easy to read. Nike is selling the Vomero 18 as the everyday trainer, the Vomero Plus as the softer step up, the Zoom Vomero Roam as the winterized version, the Zoom Vomero 5 as the one most people now buy for reasons that have nothing to do with running, and the Vomero Premium above all of them. The Premium is the only one in the group that stacks two Air Zoom units inside a full slab of ZoomX, which is the combination Nike reserves for the shoe it wants to call maximum. Nothing in the copy mentions racing, a plate or a target pace. The pitch is mileage and comfort, which is a different customer from the one buying the race-day end of the catalogue, and a much larger one. It is also the part of the running wall that has been quietly climbing in price while everybody watched the retros do it loudly.

What separates this version is almost entirely surface. Nike lists the makeup as Gridiron, Black and Multi-Color, and the photographs show an upper worked in a dark charcoal with a dotted pattern printed across the forefoot and the quarter, with a mesh tongue carrying a small woven tag that reads RUN. The Swoosh shifts green against the black depending on the light. Underneath, the midsole wall is translucent blue with a darker internal shape visible through it, the outsole carries a field of white rubber dots on blue, and the sockliners are debossed with the Vomero name. Nike has not published a materials change against the Black and White pair this site covered in September, so the honest reading is that this is the same shoe in a darker, more finished-looking execution.

Which makes the interesting part the sticker rather than the shoe, and it is worth saying plainly. The Vomero Premium is not sold as one price. Read the men’s colorways on nike.com today and the Grey Mist pair, style code HQ2050-003, comes up one number, and this Gridiron pair comes up higher. The women’s version sits with the Grey Mist pair. So Nike has taken a single model, in a single fit, and separated one colorway from the rest of its own siblings without saying why anywhere on the product page. There is no stated materials upgrade, no collaborator, no limited count and no special edition language. Brands do this often enough that nobody blinks, and it is still the sort of thing a reader deserves to have pointed at rather than smoothed over. The likeliest explanation is the printed upper and the finishing on this pair costing more to make than a panelled one, and Nike is under no obligation to say so. The effect on the shelf is the same either way. Two pairs of the same shoe sit next to each other, look like the same shoe, and ring up differently, and the only way a buyer finds that out is by checking both.

The numbers: this Gridiron pair is $240. The Grey Mist men’s pair is $230, the women’s Vomero Premium is $230, and the Black and White women’s pair this site wrote up on September 11 was recorded at $230 as well. Step down the line and the Zoom Vomero Roam is $190, the Vomero Plus is $180, the Zoom Vomero 5 is $170, the Vomero 18 is $165 and the Pegasus 42 is $155. That makes the Gridiron the most expensive shoe in the Vomero family by a clear ten dollars, and it puts it above the Streakfly 2 at $190, which is a shoe built to race in.

The Nike Vomero Premium in Gridiron, Black and Multi-Color, style code IQ6943-001, is available now at nike.com at $240, in men’s sizes M6 and W7.5 through M15 and W16.5. It went to general release rather than through a SNKRS draw, so there is no dated launch window attached to it. The Grey Mist colorway is live alongside it if the dark one is not the pick, and the lifestyle side of Nike’s week is a long way under both.
