The Air Jordan 11 Green Screen Is About How Space Jam Was Made, Not What Happened In It

Thirty years of Space Jam product has run on the same fuel, which is the cast. Bugs on the tongue, Monstars on the lining, a Lola graphic across the back. The Air Jordan 11 Green Screen, arriving November 5, skips all of it and goes after something nobody has tried to sell before, which is the equipment the film was shot against. The whole shoe is chroma key green.

That is a stranger choice on this silhouette than it would be on almost any other. The Air Jordan 11 landed in 1995 as Tinker Hatfield’s argument that a basketball shoe could carry a dress-shoe finish, and the patent leather mudguard made it the most formal thing on the floor. Three decades of releases have mostly honored that. The 11 gets deep, serious, saturated single tones, and its reputation was built on colorways people wear to weddings. Jordan Brand does put the model in loud places, but the loudness is usually the material rather than the hue. A fully saturated, flat, television-studio green is the opposite of a dress shoe. It is a color chosen specifically because cameras are supposed to throw it away, and committing an Air Jordan 11 to it is a joke the shoe has to be confident enough to carry. The Retro OG in the same collection is doing the reverent version of this anniversary. This pair is doing the other one.

Jordan Brand frames the Green Screen as a canvas for a generation of creators, which is marketing language with a real idea underneath it. The brand says orange outsole accents do double duty, reading as both Bugs Bunny’s carrots and the tracking markers used in production, and the packaging carries artwork of Michael Jordan holding a film clapperboard. Those tracking markers are the detail that makes the concept hold together rather than just look like a color story. They are the reference points a visual effects team places on a set so software can work out where the camera was, which is the single most literal piece of the machinery that put a cartoon rabbit next to a basketball player. Putting them on the bottom of the shoe is a deep cut. The outsole is also the one part of this that cannot be confirmed from the images. The press frame released with the announcement is a head-on view, the upper is a single uninterrupted green with a translucent green sole unit beneath it, and the orange the brand describes is not visible from that angle. That is consistent with it living on the tread, and it remains the brand’s description rather than a claim made here from a photograph.

The reason this one is more interesting than the character-led pieces is that it is aimed at people who make things rather than people who watched something. A green screen is not an image from the film, it is the apparatus behind it, and the only audience that reads a flat chroma green as meaningful is an audience that has used one. That is a large and growing group, and it is almost exactly the age range Jordan Brand keeps saying it is chasing. Caitlin Sargent, the brand’s marketing chief, framed the whole anniversary around cementing Jordan as a heritage brand of youth, and this is the shoe doing that work rather than the press release. The risk is obvious. Pitch a shoe at creators and you are one bad campaign away from it reading as a costume, and an all-green Air Jordan 11 has a narrow path between clever and novelty. The thing that saves it is that the reference is genuinely earned, since Space Jam was a live-action and animation hybrid and the green screen was not a flourish on that production, it was the production.

Jordan Brand has not published retail pricing for the Space Jam collection and jordan.com carries no figure for the Green Screen. The 2016 Space Jam retro launched at $220 according to the outlets covering it that December, and one aggregator has put the Retro OG from this collection at $235 without confirmation from the brand, so the Green Screen will likely sit in that band. Treat all of that as orientation rather than a number to plan around. Nothing on this pair has been priced by Jordan Brand or by a retailer yet.

The Jordan Brand x Space Jam collection arrives November 5 at jordan.com and select retailers. Jordan Brand has not published a style code for the Green Screen and has not broken out individual dates within the collection. The five Air Jordan 11 designs also take in the Retro OG, the Magic Ball, a baseball cleat and an American football cleat the brand lists as promotional and not for retail, alongside a Jordan First 1, an Air Jordan 3 Retro and two Air Jordan 1 Lows.
