The Jordan Trunner O/S "Space Jam Planet" Points at the 1992 Commercial, Not the Movie

The Jordan Trunner O/S “Space Jam Planet” lands November 5 with the rest of Jordan Brand’s 30th anniversary collection, and it is the only shoe in the group that is not a basketball shoe. Terra blush suede, orange mesh, a dark iris midsole and a purple Hare Jumpman stamped into the heel. Every other piece in the drop argues about the film. This one points at the commercial that came four years before it.

The Trunner is the part of Jordan Brand’s catalogue that gets left out of anniversaries. Nike’s own copy calls it a cross-trainer from the late 1990s and early 2000s, which is the stretch when the brand was not only a basketball line. Training shoes, running-adjacent trainers and a lot of synthetic uppers filled the back half of those catalogues, and the Trunner is the one that stayed in people’s memory, partly because it looked like nothing else wearing a Jumpman. It was a gym shoe in a line built on hardwood, and that made it the odd one out twice over.

The O/S is the current reading of it, rebuilt for off-court wear rather than a gym floor. Nike lists Cushlon 3.0 foam, molded plastic wings through the midfoot for containment, a plush tongue and collar, and a mesh upper worked against suede. That is a recipe for a chunky Y2K trainer, which is the exact shape the market has been paying for across every other brand for the last few years. Jordan Brand arriving at that trend with a model already sitting in its own back catalogue is a better position than most of its competitors managed.

The colorway is where this pair separates itself. Nike lists Terra Blush, Purple Dynasty, Marrakesh and Dark Iris, and the photographs show two tones of salmon suede over bright orange mesh, a dark purple cradle wrapping the midsole, and a pale pink outsole underneath all of it. A silver heel panel carries the Hare Jumpman in purple, the rabbit drawn in Jordan’s pose with the ball up and the ears back. The heel pull tab runs a grey reflective stripe. The outsole runs pale pink with an orange pod under the forefoot and a dark slot set into the heel, and Nike’s spec list stops at foam, so no Air unit is claimed here and none should be read into that opening. Against the rest of the collection this is the only warm palette on the board. The Air Jordan 11s run royal blue, green and a color-shifting synthetic, the Air Jordan 3 is pale with pink, and the Spizike Low is black. Salmon and purple does not look like a Space Jam shoe at all until the heel is turned around.

The name is doing more work than the shoe lets on. Nike’s release opens by pointing out that Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny first appeared together in the 1992 Hare Jordan commercial, four years ahead of the film, and the Hare Jumpman belongs to that commercial rather than to the movie. Putting it on a trainer instead of a retro basketball shoe is the one place in this collection where the brand acknowledges that the thing being celebrated started as an ad. The planet in the name goes unexplained in Nike’s copy, and nothing on the upper spells it out either. The box is where the wider artwork lives, printed inside the lid rather than on the shoe, which is the same restraint the rest of this pair shows.

It is also the most clear-eyed piece in the drop about what Jordan Brand actually sells now. The Air Jordan 11 Retro OG carries the anniversary because it is the shoe from the film, and five versions of the 11 is a reasonable way to mark thirty years. The shoe most people will wear every day out of this collection is a foam-soled trainer with suede on it, not a patent-leather basketball shoe, and the pricing says the brand knows that.

At $130 the Trunner O/S is the cheapest adult shoe in the collection, level with the Air Jordan 1 Low SE “Magic Ball” and under the Jordan Triangle at $150 and the Spizike Low “Jam Central” at $165. For a shoe carrying suede panels and a molded midfoot cage that is a fair number, and it sits below where most chunky trainers from competing brands have landed. Resale is not the story here. The Trunner has never been a model that trades above retail, and a general release in a palette nobody will fight over is a shoe to buy on the day if the color works for you.

The Jordan Trunner O/S “Space Jam Planet” is listed for November 5 at nike.com and on SNKRS under style code IX6403-200, at $130, in men’s sizing. The listed colorway is Terra Blush, Purple Dynasty, Marrakesh and Dark Iris. Jordan Brand’s release dates the whole collection to November 5 without breaking out individual shoes, so that is the collection’s date rather than a confirmed date for this pair.
