Nike Named the Pegasus Premium's Color Pink, and the Photographs Disagree

Nike is releasing three of its most heavily cushioned road shoes on October 20 in the same women’s colorway, and the Pegasus Premium is the one worth stopping on. It is the model Nike built around the first sculpted, visible Air Zoom unit, and this is the first time this site has covered one. Nike has given the color a name that the photographs do not quite support, which is its own small story.

The Pegasus has been Nike’s volume road shoe for over forty years, the model that absorbs whatever cushioning technology the brand wants to put in front of a general audience. The Premium is the top of that family rather than a version of the standard shoe. It arrived at the start of 2025 carrying a midsole Nike had been talking about since the previous spring, built around an Air Zoom unit that was shaped to the contour of the foot instead of sitting flat under it. That was the pitch and it was a real departure. Zoom Air had been a flat tensioned bag since the 1990s, so sculpting it and then making it visible through the sidewall was both an engineering change and a merchandising one. Nike stacked ZoomX foam above it and put ReactX in the heel, which makes the Premium a three-material midsole in a category where most shoes run one foam and a plate.

This pair is listed as Pink Smoke, Mystic Dates, Light Boulder and Metallic Red Bronze, and in every press frame it photographs as a deep wine. There is a dusty mauve in the mesh around the collar and the forefoot panel that reads as pink in isolation, but the shoe as a whole is burgundy, and the midsole and outsole are a darker shade of the same. The upper is a circular knit with a ribbed section across the midfoot, there is a tonal AIR on the lateral midsole and ZOOM on the sidewall of the Air unit, and the Swoosh is a metallic bronze that shifts toward rose depending on the light. The Air Zoom unit itself is the most interesting thing to look at, visible through a window in the midsole wall with an iridescent blue and pink cast inside it that none of the color names mention. The outsole carries the sculpted unit’s shape through to the ground, with the bronze tone showing through the tread. Seen from above, the pair is almost entirely one color, with the tongue branding and the heel pull the only breaks in it. That monotone treatment is a choice worth noting on a shoe whose whole argument is a visible midsole component, because it makes the Air unit the one place the eye has anywhere to go.

What this release says about Nike is in the merchandising rather than the shoe. The Vomero Premium and the Vomero Plus arrive the same day in the same palette, so Nike is selling its three most cushioned road models as a matched women’s set, at three price points, with no technology story separating them at the point of sale. That is a department store approach to a performance category, and it works against the argument Nike spent 2025 making, which was that these midsoles are meaningfully different from each other. A runner choosing between a sculpted Air Zoom unit and a full ZoomX stack is making a real decision about ride. A runner choosing between three shoes in the same wine colorway is making a different one. It is also worth saying that Nike has done this to the women’s line specifically. The men’s versions of these models are not landing as a matched trio on October 20, so the set exists on the women’s side of the catalog and nowhere else. The Premium is the most technically distinct of the three and the one that most deserves to be bought on its merits, which makes it the odd beneficiary of being presented as an option in a set.

Retail is $230, the same number the Pegasus Premium has carried through its other colorways, including the Melitta Baumeister collaboration arriving alongside it. Within the set it sits in the middle, under the Vomero Premium at $240 and over the Vomero Plus at $180. For context on how far up the ladder that is, the Pegasus 42 GORE-TEX runs $165 and the Structure Plus is $170, so the Premium asks about forty percent more than the waterproof version of Nike’s standard trainer. That premium buys the sculpted Air unit and the three-material midsole rather than a weight saving, and it puts the shoe into the range where carbon-plated racers live, which remains the hardest comparison the Premium has to answer.
