The KAI 1 Chief Hélà Red Takes Kyrie’s Ceremonial Fringe Onto the Court

The KAI 1 Chief Hélà Red Takes Kyrie’s Ceremonial Fringe Onto the Court

ANTA puts the KAI 1 back on the release calendar October 24 in a head to toe red called Chief Hélà, and the shoe arrives wearing a shroud of suede fringe. Chief Hélà is the makeup ANTA reserves for its most personal Kyrie Irving product, built around the ceremony he completed with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the name he received there. Until now that treatment has lived on the lifestyle side of his line. This is the first time ANTA has put it on a shoe built to play in.

The KAI 1 is where the signature line started. Irving signed with ANTA after his Nike deal ended, and the first shoe to carry his name arrived in 2024 with a low cut, a midfoot strap and tooling aimed at guards who change direction more often than they rise. ANTA has moved the line forward twice since. The KAI 3 carries the current tooling and most of the marketing, and the KAIBRID sits beside it as the experimental one. A brand holding a 2024 signature model and two newer ones would usually let the first shoe drift into clearance. ANTA has not. It keeps going back to the KAI 1 for colorways with something to say, which is a different use for an older model than running it out at a discount. Irving is Chief Creative Officer for ANTA Basketball rather than an endorser collecting a royalty, and the KAI 1 is the shoe that arrangement produced first. That history is the reason a treatment this loaded landed here instead of on the newer model.

Everything on this pair is red. The engineered mesh, the cage over it, the strap, the laces, the midsole and the outsole all sit in the same deep crimson, so every detail has to come out of texture instead of contrast. The fringe is the loudest of them, a suede shroud cut into long strips that hangs off the lateral side and wraps the heel, trimmed along its upper edge with small gold triangular studs. A gold metal feather hangs from the lacing on a ball chain. The midfoot strap carries gold figures across its face and the same shapes are embossed into the panels beneath it, so the pattern appears and disappears as the light moves. A gold medallion sits at the throat and a small gold 11 sits on the lateral forefoot. ANTA’s release describes tassel details at the collar echoing a ceremonial cloak. The photographs support the reference and undersell the scale, because this is not trim. It is a full shroud, long enough to swing, and it is the first thing anyone will see.

Heritage is what this program runs on now. The Hélà Style lifestyle line launched during Irving’s China tour, the trip on which ANTA installed him as Chief Creative Officer, and its first Chief Hélà makeup used brown suede with tassels at the heel. The Roots pack that followed cut the idea down to monochrome suedes. Moving the treatment onto the performance shoe is ANTA betting that the story can carry a basketball shoe and not only a lifestyle one, and that is a real bet rather than a safe extension, because a player buying a hoop shoe is buying traction first and a story second. ANTA’s own copy frames the burgundy as the prairie’s sunset glow, which is the kind of line a brand writes when it wants color to do narrative work, and on a shoe this monochrome the color genuinely has to. The risk sits in the presentation. The press kit is product on grey with nobody in it, no court, no ceremony, no Irving. A shoe about a person and a place arriving with neither visible in the imagery is how a tribute slides into a pattern, and ANTA has been better than that on this line before.

Retail is $135, and that figure only means something next to the rest of the line. The KAI 3 “Alchemist” and the Macao “Hearts” both landed at $135, the “Kai Feng” and the KAIBRID “Spades” at $150, and the Hélà Style “Roots” at $130. ANTA’s entire Kyrie program therefore lives inside a twenty dollar band, and a fringed, studded, metal charmed special makeup sits at the bottom of it rather than carrying a premium for the work. The line has not built a resale market worth quoting, and ANTA has never priced it as though it expected one. That consistency is the most underrated thing about the whole operation.

The ANTA KAI 1 Chief Hélà “Red” releases October 24 at ANTA.com, ANTA Beverly Hills, JD Canada, JD US and Scheels, priced at $135. ANTA has published no style code with the release, so there is nothing to search on at third party retailers and the brand’s own product page is the only listing that resolves. That page is already live ahead of the date.
