Every Oregon kid of a certain age remembers the week they were bussed into the woods for Outdoor School. Aminé remembers his well enough to build a shoe out of it. The Portland rapper’s New Balance 992 “Outdoor School” arrives October 2, and it is his first project on the Made in USA line, which is a different assignment than the collaborations that introduced him to New Balance. It ships in a box built to look like a tackle box, with a wooden name tag rattling around inside.
The 992 arrived in 2006, five years behind the 991 and more than two decades after the 990 established what an expensive American running shoe was allowed to cost. For most of its first life it sold on engineering rather than on anything cultural, an ABZORB and ENCAP platform aimed at people who wanted the cushioning and did not care what the shoe looked like. What reopened it was collaboration. Joe Freshgoods spent years using the 992 as his canvas, a run New Balance itself marked in February 2025 with the “Aged Well” 992, and somewhere in that stretch the model stopped being a runner’s shoe and became the Made in USA silhouette people set alarms for. The factories in Massachusetts and Maine turned into a selling point on their own, which is not something New Balance could have engineered on purpose.

Aminé’s version runs dark. Premium suede in deep brown carries the bulk of the upper, with maroon mesh in the panels and burnt orange patent leather picking out the overlays, a palette pulled from Oregon trail colors rather than from anything on a New Balance seasonal sheet. The midsole splits, white at the forefoot and cream at the heel, which reads as wear before the shoe has been worn. Club Banana branding sits on the tongue and Aminé’s script is embossed at the heel. The insoles carry Outdoor School curriculum graphics. The real work is in the packaging: a tackle box, a wooden “wood cookie” name tag stamped Horizon Cabin, and five charms to hang off it, a frog, a compass, a working whistle, a slug and a fish. Anyone who went through the program will recognize every one of those objects.
What makes this one worth paying attention to is what it borrows. Sneaker collaborations usually reach for a city, a record, a subculture or a defunct sports team. This one reaches for a publicly funded school program. Outdoor School launched in Southern Oregon in 1957 and stayed patchy for decades, funded district by district, until Oregon voters passed Measure 99 in 2016 and dedicated lottery money so that every fifth or sixth grader in the state could go. Oregon State University Extension administers it now. Putting that on a sneaker is a bet that a regional memory can carry a national release, and it is a more interesting bet than another city pack. It also tells you where New Balance’s Made in USA program is pointed, which is at storytellers rather than at athletes.

Aminé has been building toward this. His first New Balance shoe was the 610 “Mooz” announced in 2023, and he followed it with a project built around Benson Polytechnic High School and its Radio KBPS program, which is about as local as a sneaker reference gets. Each one has narrowed rather than widened, moving from a lifestyle trail model to a specific school to a specific week at a specific camp. Getting handed the Made in USA line is the graduation, because that is where New Balance puts the partners it intends to keep. The risk is obvious. A shoe this specific either lands hard with the people who lived it or reads as inside baseball to everyone else, and Oregon is not a large state.
Retail is $220, and the number is the argument. New Balance’s own general release Made in USA 992 lists at $219.99 on newbalance.com, so this pair carries no collaboration premium at all, which is rare enough to notice. The “Aged Well” 992 held the same $220 in February 2025. For comparison inside the same American-made family, the 993 and the 990v6 both sit at $199.99 and the 990v4 at $184.99, so the 992 has always been the one you pay a little more for. The charms, the tackle box and the wood cookie are, on paper, free.

The Aminé x New Balance 992 “Outdoor School” releases October 2 through Club Banana’s own channels, then goes wider on October 9 at newbalance.com and select retailers. The style code is U992NE and retail is $220.
