CNCPTS x New Balance 997 ‘Montage’ Embraces Grunge Distress

$220
New Balance 997

New Balance and Boston retailer CNCPTS are releasing the CNCPTS x New Balance 997 ‘Montage’, a fifth collaborative chapter on one of New Balance’s most storied running silhouettes, and this one takes a sharp turn away from everything the two have done together before.

New Balance has been making performance and lifestyle footwear in the United States for decades, and the brand built a devoted following by prioritizing fit and construction over celebrity endorsements. That reputation for understated craftsmanship made New Balance a natural fit for collectors and independent retailers who cared more about materials and history than hype. CNCPTS, the Boston and New York-based retailer, sits comfortably in that world. The shop has built a long record of thoughtful New Balance collaborations, earning trust from both the brand and the sneaker community by treating each project as a considered creative statement rather than a quick drop.

The 997 is central to that story. Introduced in 1989, the silhouette arrived as one of New Balance’s flagship running shoes, packed with cushioning technology and a substantial, layered build that set it apart from the sleeker runners of its era. Over the decades it became a collector favorite, appreciated for its craft and its connection to a specific period in American athletic footwear. CNCPTS has returned to the 997 four times before the ‘Montage’, with those earlier editions leaning into tonal colorwork and premium material choices that felt like a natural extension of the shoe’s original sensibility.

The ‘Montage’ changes that approach entirely. Instead of polish, CNCPTS applied distressed finishes and an intentionally undone treatment to the classic shape, pulling from punk and grunge aesthetics that were circulating in the same cultural moment the 997 first appeared. The collaborative concept plays with the idea of cultural circulation, the sense that influences loop back around while continuing to evolve. The result is a moody, textured shoe that feels rooted in the early 1990s while sitting firmly in the present.

The CNCPTS x New Balance 997 ‘Montage’ drops at cncpts.com on Thursday, December 11 at 10 AM EST as a first-come, first-served release in limited quantities, priced at $220 USD. CNCPTS’ Boston and New York store locations are also receiving pairs through an online drawing that opens Tuesday, December 10 at 12 PM EST. To mark the release, CNCPTS and New Balance are hosting an event at Lou’s, a vinyl lounge in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 10, 2025, featuring music and community programming. An RSVP is required but does not guarantee entry. If this one moves you, it is worth exploring other CNCPTS x New Balance projects or digging into the broader New Balance 99x family to see where the 997 sits among its siblings.
