The Air Max 95 is the moment Nike stopped designing running shoes to look fast.
Sergio Lozano drew it in 1995, and he built it around two ideas that have nothing to do with speed. The first was erosion, layers of soil worn away by rain to reveal what sits underneath, which is where the gradient comes from. The second was human anatomy. The shank running along the outsole and heel is the spine, the nylon eyelets are ribs, and the layered mesh up the sides is muscle fibre. It was also the first running shoe with visible Air in the forefoot, which people forget because the shoe looks so unlike a technical argument.
It did not stay a running shoe. The neon original went to the UK and Japan and stayed there, worn by people with no interest in Nike’s cushioning roadmap, and the 95 has been read as a street shoe ever since. That is why the model behaves differently from the rest of the Air Max line. An Air Max 1 reissue is a nostalgia play for sneaker people. A 95 in the right colorway is a regional signal.
The bubble is the tell. Nike has gone back and forth between the modern tooling and the reissued Big Bubble, and enthusiasts care about that difference far more than the marketing usually admits. If you are deciding between two pairs that look identical in photographs, the bubble and the panel materials are where the money actually goes.
This page collects every Air Max 95 we cover, Big Bubble reissues and collaborations included, with release dates, retail prices, style codes, and where to buy. Most 95 colorways are variations on a fixed formula, so the notes focus on what changes: the panel materials, the gradient, and which tooling you are getting.
