New Balance ABZORB 2000S “Fennel Seed” Remixes a Shoe That Is One Year Old

The S in ABZORB 2000S does not stand for anything numerical. It stands for Sleek. That is worth knowing before you read another word about this shoe, because the number in a New Balance name usually points at an archive, and here it points at a model that is barely a year old.

Start with what ABZORB is, since the name carries the whole line. It is New Balance’s compression-resistant cushioning compound, introduced in 1993 by the brand’s own dating. ABZORB SBS, the discrete gel-like pods, came later. What matters is that ABZORB is a material, not a silhouette, and in 2025 New Balance built a product family around it rather than around a shoe.

That family is new. The ABZORB 2010 arrived in May 2025 and the ABZORB 2000 in June 2025 at $170, launched under a program the brand titled The New Iteration of ABZORB and previewed at Milan Design Week. There is no historic New Balance 2000 behind it. One outlet has claimed the model differs from an original NB 2000 from the early 2010s, and no other source supports that shoe existing. Treat it as an error until somebody produces one.

The 2000S is a second upper on that same sole. It surfaced first on a runway, at the Brazilian label Quadro Creations’ autumn and winter 2026 show, before New Balance put it in line. The bulbous segmented sole unit carries over unchanged, with a full-length combination of ABZORB and ABZORB SBS pods and a Stability Web shank. What changed is above it: the 2000’s layered mesh and overlay build becomes a single-piece textured shell, with mesh showing only at the collar and the lace area, a no-sew N at the lateral forefoot and a protective rubber print across the upper.

Put that next to how New Balance has worked for the last five years and the shift is obvious. The 2002R and the 1906R were real archive shoes rescued with a borrowed 860v2 sole, because the original gel tooling could not be reproduced. The 9060 was a genuinely new silhouette assembled from 990 and 860 parts. The ABZORB 1890 this March bolted an 890v3 reference upper onto the original 2002 sole unit, and the brand said so openly. Every one of those reached backwards. The 2000S reaches back twelve months. New Balance’s parts-bin method now feeds on its own recent output rather than only on the nineties, which is a different company from the one that reissued the 2002 in 2020.

The colorway is doing quiet work too, and the feeds have read it as boutique styling language. It is not. Fennel Seed is an entry in New Balance’s own colour library, and the proof is that the same name shows up on a women’s Fresh Foam X 860v15, a stability running shoe, as Angora and Fennel Seed. The lifestyle line and the run specialty line are drawing from one palette. The ABZORB 2000 has been running the same register all year with Pumpernickel, Cortado, Limelight and Warm Skies. A brand that has moved its average selling price up around 30 percent in five years is naming shoes like a pantry, and that is a positioning decision rather than an accident.

On price, be careful with what you read. New Balance lists the 2000S at $179.99, but that is for a different colorway, the Fresh Air with Aluminum Grey pair. No United States price for Fennel Seed is confirmed anywhere, and the figures circulating are European: £170 at Footpatrol, €200 at Kith, and a $204 conversion on an Italian retailer’s American storefront. For placement, $179.99 sits above the ABZORB 2000’s own $170 and well above the $130 the 2002R launched at, which means the second upper on a one year old platform costs more than the archive shoe that built the category.

Style code is U2000460, officially Fennel Seed with Pistachio Butter. It released July 16 through European stockists including Kith Europe and Footpatrol. Whether it reached the United States at all is unclear, since no newbalance.com listing for the colorway surfaced. New Balance published no press release for the 2000S, and at least one major stockist has the model filed in its own title as an ABZORB 2002S, which is wrong.
