New Balance Allerdale Vaporous Grey and the Style Code With No Numbers

New Balance released the Allerdale in Vaporous Grey on June 18 under style code UADWLWO, and the code is the first thing worth explaining. It has no digits in it. That is not a typo and it is not a database error. The Allerdale is the rare New Balance that carries no model number at all, because it is not a retro of anything numbered.

The model arrived on March 20, 2025 as an all new addition to the Made in UK range, named, in New Balance’s words, for the historical region that houses the village of Flimby. Allerdale is the district in Cumbria that contains the factory. The shoe is named after its own postcode.

It is also not built on an existing silhouette, which is where most coverage of it goes wrong. Designer Sam Pearce has cited two inputs, the legacy of New Balance’s hiker models and the lesser known walking collection of the 1980s that was also made in England, with the 806 walking shoe as the closest single reference and proportions borrowed from the 550 and 500 court lines. The meaty 550 comparison that circulated at launch is an editorial impression rather than a tooling claim. Construction is a leather upper on a cup sole with FuelCell foam inside, hiking derived D ring lacing, an Ortholite insole and an embroidered flying NB.

Vaporous Grey is officially Vaporous Grey with Chipmunk, and the naming needs a warning. Vaporous Grey is New Balance’s word for an off white. Todd Snyder merchandises this exact style code as White. Anyone shopping for a grey shoe will not find one here. The upper reads sheer white, the Chipmunk brown shows up in the leather lining, and an olive footbed hides underneath.

The Allerdale matters more than a single colorway because of how small the Made in UK line has become. New Balance’s British Made in UK page currently carries essentially three models, the 991v2 at £210, the 991v1 at £220 and the Allerdale at £210. A brand new last arriving as one third of an entire national lineup is a real bet, and Pearce was blunt about who it is for. If you want a normal sneaker, in his words, not for them. The target wears more formal clothes than a running shoe suits.

One claim needs to stay off this shoe. New Balance’s well known domestic value line, that Made in USA footwear contains a domestic value of 70 percent or more, is an American claim and New Balance publishes it only for the American factories. No Made in UK equivalent exists anywhere on the brand’s site. Any post that transplants the 70 percent figure onto a Flimby shoe invented it. What New Balance does publish about Flimby is concrete enough on its own. The factory has been home to the Made in UK line since 1991, employs around 300 skilled workers, and turns out roughly 30,000 pairs a month in a village of under 2,000 residents on the Irish Sea coast.

Price is the field that will not resolve to one number, so here is the whole picture rather than a guess. Todd Snyder and Drake’s both sell UADWLWO at $250. New Balance’s own American product page for the sibling Allerdale colorway UADWKKB lists $269.99. In Britain the entire Allerdale line is £210. The likeliest reading is a $250 wholesale price that accounts still honor against a $269.99 New Balance direct price, and this colorway is now delisted on both newbalance.com and newbalance.co.uk, so no brand page states a figure for it at all.

Either way that puts the Allerdale at parity with the 991v2, the line’s flagship, rather than below it. Three months out it is also discounting where it was made rather than where it was priced highest. Overkill in Berlin has it at 170 euros, down from 249, and Slam Jam has it at $153, while Todd Snyder and Drake’s still hold $250 with most sizes in stock. A £210 British price is roughly £175 before VAT, so the shoe is cheaper at home and clearing faster in Europe than in the States.

Back to the style code, because it is the thing a reader will actually wonder about. UADW is the model. The three letters after it are a color mnemonic, and New Balance’s own UK model page makes the pattern readable in one screen. UADWBRN is Tortoise Shell, UADWWHI is White, UADWKKB is Black with Chipmunk and Gum, UADWCRM is White Pepper, UADWYEL is Chai Tea, and the specials follow the same shape. The wrinkle is that New Balance’s own product pages do not use those codes internally. They run on IDs shaped like UADWV1-48116. The code every outlet publishes is the global wholesale SKU, not what the brand’s own site is built on.

That date comes from Sneaker Bar Detroit and JustFreshKicks agreeing with each other rather than from New Balance, and European retailers had stock before it. Todd Snyder and Drake’s both have full size runs at $250, and Overkill has it at 170 euros.
