Santis has led New Balance Made in USA for years while running Aime Leon Dore, so these releases tend to carry more design intent than a logo swap. The FuelCell Rebel v5 is a daily trainer built for tempo runs and uptempo miles, and putting an ALD spin on a race adjacent shoe rather than another retro runner says something about where both parties see the market going.
To me this proves that the lifestyle brands paying attention are moving into performance running, not away from it. The dad shoe wave that carried New Balance for years has cooled, and the energy has shifted toward carbon plates, foam, and marathon season. Wrapping that story in ALD’s muted, gradient heavy design language gives the running crowd a pair with real street credibility, and gives the ALD faithful a reason to actually log some miles.
