Tyrese Maxey led the entire NBA in minutes per game last season at 38.0. That is the number to hold onto when the Maxey v1 arrives on October 2, because it explains a shoe that otherwise reads as conservative. New Balance did not build its second eponymous basketball line around speed, which is what you would expect for a guard who scored 28.3 points a game. It built a containment package.

Look at what is actually in it. A FuelCell midsole carries a decoupled plate New Balance calls QUIXRAIL, running along both sides rather than as one full-length piece, with reinforced sidewalls, a TPU shank, sculpted outriggers and an inset lacing structure. New Balance’s own release describes a dual rail system for forward propulsion and lateral support, a centerline flex groove and multidirectional traction. None of that is the vocabulary of a lightweight scoring shoe. It is the vocabulary of a shoe that has to survive 38 minutes a night against guards trying to turn a corner on you.
Maxey had input and said what he was after. “I wanted my shoe to have an iconic look that you don’t need to see the N to know it’s a New Balance shoe,” he told the brand, adding that he pulled from the 9060 because he considers it a classic New Balance silhouette. The top lacing borrows from the 2002 and the outriggers echo the 9060, so the reference is visible rather than claimed.
One thing being reported about this shoe is wrong and worth fixing, because the true version is better. Sneaker Bar Detroit says Maxey debuted the v1 during the 2026 playoffs. He did not. He wore it on April 15 in the SoFi Play-In Tournament against Orlando, scored 31 in a 109 to 97 win, and that game is what got Philadelphia the seventh seed. The shoe’s first appearance was not in the postseason. It was in the game that decided whether there would be one.
The context Maxey brings to a first signature is real. Philadelphia took him 21st overall in 2020 out of Kentucky, which is late enough that nobody was planning a shoe around him. He signed with New Balance in January 2023, won Most Improved Player and made his first All-Star team in 2024, signed a five year, $204 million extension that July, and last season started the All-Star Game and made All-NBA Third Team for the first time. Six seasons from the 21st pick to a signature line is a normal enough arc. Doing it while leading the league in minutes is the part that shaped the product.
There is a bigger frame behind the price too. New Balance did $9.2 billion in revenue in 2025, up 19 percent and its fifth straight year of double-digit growth, and it is chasing $10 billion this year. It holds roughly 5.6 percent of the United States sports footwear market against Nike’s third. A brand growing that fast with that little share does not need a signature shoe to sell like a Jordan retro. It needs one that puts its name on an NBA floor 82 nights a year on a player nobody is bored of yet, and Maxey at the top of the minutes table is the most on-court time a single endorsement can buy.
Retail is $129.99, and the number is the strategy. New Balance is releasing the Kawhi V this year at $160. Same brand, same calendar, thirty dollars apart, which makes Kawhi the flagship and Maxey the accessible entry to the category. That is a defensible way to build a basketball business when your own chief marketing officer has said publicly that the brand does not judge its basketball entry by how many basketball shoes it sells. It also lands the v1 exactly on the current line for a first signature shoe: the PUMA Hali 1 and the Skechers SKX JE1, worn by Maxey’s own teammate Joel Embiid, both came in at $130, and the adidas AE 1 launched at $120.
The Maxey v1 releases October 2 at newbalance.com and select retailers, style code UMAX2NK. New Balance has not named a single third-party door, so anyone publishing a retailer list is guessing. It has also not given the launch colorway a name: the product page calls it light arctic grey with black while the press release describes blue accents on a black base, which are two different shoes. More colorways are promised later in the season without specifics.
