The 990v4 Olive Leaf Shows What New Balance’s 70 Percent Rule Actually Buys

New Balance‘s Made in USA 990v4 in olive had been on shelves for nearly four months by the time this page first described it, which is the first of several things worth correcting. The post called the shoe green and treated it as a new arrival. New Balance‘s own colorway string is Olive Leaf, Permafrost and Light Olive, the pair released February 26, and the figure printed here as its retail price was a sale price that happened to be running the week the post went up.

The 990 is the reason any of this is interesting. New Balance states in its own press material that the series was first established in 1982, and the shoe arrived as a deliberately expensive running shoe at a moment when nobody had tried to sell one at that level. The widely repeated $100 launch price comes from editorial histories rather than from New Balance or a newspaper of record, so take it as well corroborated rather than settled. What is not in dispute is what the number bought. The 990 sold on construction, on domestic manufacturing and on fit, and it has spent forty years being the shoe people buy when they have stopped caring what a sneaker signals.

The Made in USA program is where the post overreached in the other direction. It said the designation is a specific commitment rather than a marketing phrase, which sounds right and skips the actual language. New Balance’s own disclaimer, printed on the 990v4 product pages, reads that New Balance MADE U.S. footwear contains a domestic value of 70 percent or more, and that MADE makes up a limited portion of New Balance’s U.S. sales. Seventy percent is a real threshold and it is also a threshold, not a total. The company runs five manufacturing facilities across Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and it has been adding capacity rather than trimming it, including an expanded plant in Central Maine. Quoting the seventy percent line is more useful to a reader than repeating the phrase on the box, and it is the sort of thing a brand only prints because it has to.

Teddy Santis has been Creative Director of New Balance MADE in USA since April 2021. That is a creative role over the line’s direction and design, which is not the same as directing domestic production, and this post had it as the latter.

On the shoe, New Balance’s own spec copy is more specific than the vague suede, leather and rubber this post ran with. The upper is pigskin suede and mesh with suede and synthetic overlays. The midsole is a combination of ENCAP and C-CAP, with ABZORB cushioning at both the heel and the forefoot. The outsole is NDurance rubber. There are reflective accents, and New Balance notes on the product page that the shoe contains pig leather. The olive treatment runs through all of it, including the outsole, which is the detail that separates it from the grey the line is known for. One claim has been removed outright: the post said each pair ships with a spare set of laces. No New Balance material says that, and nothing else supports it.

Retail is $184.99 on newbalance.com, where two other Made in USA 990v4 colorways carry the identical price, and Sneaker Bar Detroit priced this colorway at $185 at launch. The $156 this post published was a markdown. A deal post ran on the Olive Leaf five days before this page was written, which is almost certainly where the number came from, and a sale price presented as retail is a specific kind of error: it makes the shoe look cheaper than it is, and it stops being true the moment the promotion ends. The honest comparison is $184.99 against the roughly $200 the newer Made in USA models ask.

Style code U9901MX, colorway Olive Leaf/Permafrost/Light Olive, $184.99, released February 26, 2026 through newbalance.com and Made in USA stockists. The code does not follow the usual v4 pattern, where a colorway reads as letters plus a trailing 4, as on the Grey Violet U990LV4. It is still the correct code for this pair and resolves everywhere.
