Nike Air Diamond Turf 2 “Royals” Honors a Team Deion Sanders Never Played For

Nike put the Air Diamond Turf 2 back on shelves June 12 in a makeup that every feed filed under “Royals,” a name Nike itself never used. The shoe is real and the baseball read is half right. The story most of the coverage attached to it is wrong, and it is wrong in a way that takes one look at a box score to check. Deion Sanders never played a game for the Kansas City Royals. The connection is a draft card, not a roster line, and that turns out to be the better story anyway.

The Diamond Turf line exists because Sanders needed footwear that could follow him between two sports inside the same calendar year. Nike released the original Air Diamond Turf in 1993 and followed it with the Diamond Turf 2 across the 1994 to 1995 stretch, the window that covered his single season with the San Francisco 49ers. Both were cross-trainers in the literal sense: a forefoot strap, a high padded collar, and a wide tooling that had to survive turf, a batter’s box and a weight room without becoming three separate shoes. Nike has never publicly credited an individual designer on either model, and the sourcing that names one traces back to blogs rather than to the brand, so the honest answer is that it is not on record. What is on record is the commercial logic. In the early nineties the cross-trainer was Nike’s second-biggest idea after basketball, and Sanders was the only athlete on the payroll whose actual job made the category literal.

Nike’s own listing calls the colorway Sail, Blue Grey, Metallic Gold and Mystic Navy, which describes the shoe more accurately than the nickname does. An earlier version of this post said powder blue and white run across the upper. That is wrong in both directions. The base is sail, a warm off-white rather than a bright one, and the dominant second color is a deep mystic navy covering the strap, the collar and the heel wrap. Blue grey sits in the midsole and the mudguard, and the gold is a small hit on the branding, not a panel. The leather is the same heavy, slightly stiff build the retro program has been running on this model, and the strap still functions, which matters on a shoe whose entire visual identity is that band across the forefoot. One more detail the original post missed: this was not the date Nike first set. The pair was scheduled for April 4 and moved to June 12.

The Royals name is where it gets worth arguing about. Kansas City drafted Sanders in the sixth round of the 1985 draft out of North Fort Myers High School in Florida, and he did not sign, going to Florida State instead. He entered professional baseball three years later as a 30th-round Yankees pick. His major league clubs were the Yankees in 1989 and 1990, the Braves from 1991 to 1994, the Reds across 1994, 1995, 1997 and 2001, and the Giants in 1995. Kansas City appears nowhere on that list. So a Royals-colored Diamond Turf is not a tribute to a season. It is a tribute to a road not taken, which is an unusual thing for a retro program to attempt, and it only lands if the copy says so. When the copy does not, readers fill in a roster that never existed. That is how this error spreads, and it is the same one the Air Max 1 City Connect post had to clear up.

Retail is $170, confirmed on Nike’s own product page. That sits under the $180 to $200 band most nineties basketball retros carry now and level with the rest of the current cross-trainer program. It has not held, though. Nike’s page listed the pair at $102.97 on September 11, a cut of about 39 percent inside three months on a first-party channel. Retro cross-trainers behave this way. The silhouette has a real audience and that audience is not large enough to clear full-price inventory at scale, so the standout colorways sell through and everything else reaches the markdown page quickly.

The Nike Air Diamond Turf 2 released June 12 at $170 under style code II7080-100, after moving off an original April 4 date. Nike lists the colorway as Sail, Blue Grey, Metallic Gold and Mystic Navy.
