Nike is preparing to release the Air Max Joga Bonita R9, a hybrid sneaker that pairs the upper from the Mercurial R9 football boot with the sole unit from the Air Max 95. The first colorway arrives in metallic silver, varsity maize, varsity royal, and black, arriving this July.
The Mercurial R9 carries significant football history. The boot was the signature model of Ronaldo Nazário, the Brazilian striker who wore the number 9 throughout his career. Most notably, Ronaldo wore the Mercurial during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. The R9 designation on this release directly references his name and iconic jersey number. Nike has made the Mercurial R9 a centerpiece of their World Cup 2026 strategy, featuring the silhouette across multiple collaborative and in-house releases.
The “Joga Bonita” name references a Portuguese phrase meaning “play beautifully,” a philosophy rooted in Brazilian football culture. The term gained mainstream recognition through Pelé and became the basis for Nike’s own global football campaign in the 2000s. Nike used the Joga Bonita campaign to celebrate Brazilian football style through short-form videos featuring skill, tricks, and the distinctive approach associated with the country’s national team.
The Air Max 95 silhouette, released in 1995 and designed by Sergio Lozano, remains one of Nike’s most recognizable sneaker architectures. Its visible Air Max unit and segmented upper have made it a staple in sneaker culture for nearly three decades. Pairing this established tooling with the Mercurial R9 upper creates a street-ready interpretation of a performance football boot, designed for everyday wear rather than pitch play.

This release follows Nike’s broader World Cup footwear strategy, which includes the CryoShot X2 collection. That project reimagines classic Nike football boots by capping their spike studs with clear rubber, allowing the cleats to function as standard sneakers while retaining their original aesthetic. The CryoShot line features collaborative versions with seven international partners, each styled in their respective national team colors.
The Air Max Joga Bonita R9 takes a different approach by removing the cleated tooling entirely and instead borrowing proven sneaker construction. This makes the shoe more accessible and wearable for a general audience, while still nodding to its football heritage through the Mercurial upper design.
Nike expects a wider release in fall 2026, but this initial colorway is scheduled for early July. The model carries a retail price point designed to reflect its special edition status within Nike’s World Cup portfolio.
