Nike Rift 2 “Kenya” Is Back, and Nike Does Not Call It That

The Rift 2 is back on shelves, and the pair drawing the most attention is a dark green and black makeup that sneaker media has been calling the “Kenya.” Nike does not call it that. On nike.com it is listed as the Women’s Rift 2 in “Black and Tm Dark Green,” style code IQ8006-002, at $125. The nickname stuck because the color story points straight back at where this shoe came from, and that origin is one of the better documented ones in Nike’s running catalog.

The original Air Rift arrived in 1996, and Nike’s own Inside the Vault feature is unusually direct about it. The shoe was built with input from barefoot long-distance runners in Kenya and took its name and its shape from the country’s Great Rift Valley, with the split toe meant to echo the fault line and let the foot move closer to the way it moves unshod. That matters because a lot of the barefoot-running lore attached to mid-nineties footwear is marketing applied after the fact. This one is on the record, in the brand’s own words. What Nike does not publish anywhere findable is a designer credit, so any account naming a specific person is going past the source. The Rift 2 followed in 2002, described by Nike as an updated version of the ’96 original, cleaner and less bulky with the split toe intact. Nike retroed the first Air Rift in 2023. The sequel has waited three more years for its turn.

One detail in the earlier version of this post was backwards, and it is worth naming rather than quietly fixing. The upper was described as black mesh over a dark green base. It runs the other way. The dark green mesh is the base layer and the black mesh sits over it as the side-panel overlay, which changes how the shoe reads, because the green is what carries the color story and the black is what settles it down. Two mesh weights are at work across the upper, giving it visible texture without adding structure. The Swooshes on the outer toes are small, embroidered, and picked out in Fire Red, and they are the only raised voice on the shoe. Nike’s own product copy does not itemize any of this. It mentions a flexible upper with mesh underlays and leaves the color breakdown alone, which is why the specifics have to come from people who photographed the pair rather than from the brand.

Nike revealed the Rift 2 through SNKRS Verified, the episodic format that replaced the older live unveilings, and it shared Episode 2 with the Air Max 95 Big Bubble Woven and the Air Liquid Max. That is a telling lineup. All three are awkward, specific shapes that Nike is betting a wider audience is finally ready to wear, and the Rift is the oldest and least conventional of the group. The read is that split-toe is being treated as a shape with a future rather than a curiosity dusted off every few years out of obligation. One claim in circulation does need trimming: this is not uniquely the first retro of the Rift 2. Nike launched four colorways of it together, including a Summit White and Swan pair that at least one outlet called the first retro run. Kenya is one of a set, not a solo return.

At $125 the Rift 2 undercuts almost every retro runner Nike is currently pushing and sits well below the Air Max 95 that shared its SNKRS episode. The Rift has never carried a hype tax and the resale market has never treated it as an asset, which is a large part of why the people who buy them tend to actually wear them. Pairs are still available at retail months after launch. Demand is steady rather than frantic, and for a shoe built on comfort and a strange silhouette, that is the correct outcome rather than a disappointment.

Nike no longer displays a release date on the product page. Most of the coverage carried June 25, 2026, while JustFreshKicks published August 5, so the exact day is unsettled and this post is not going to pick one. What is settled is that IQ8006-002 is live now at $125 in women’s sizing. Nike’s own page is the cleanest place to check stock, Notre has it at $125, and Sneakersnstuff is carrying it in Europe at 130 euros with some sizes already gone. There is no men’s size run for this colorway.
