Nike Kobe 3 Low Protro “Pure Platinum” Is the One Protro That Never Existed

Every Protro Nike has made is a reissue of a shoe Kobe Bryant actually played in. This one is not. The Kobe 3 was a high-top and only ever a high-top, the last one in the line, and there is no archive pair of a Kobe 3 Low to restore. Nike took the shoe from his MVP season and cut it down into the shape the Kobe 4 made famous a year later, which makes this the rare retro of something that never happened.

A note on the name before anything else, because it is circulating wrong. This is not the “Platinum Grey.” Nike’s own page calls it the Kobe III Low Protro in Pure Platinum and Armory Blue, and there is no Kobe colorway called Platinum Grey anywhere on Nike.com or in either major release calendar.

Eric Avar designed the original Kobe 3 and it released in 2008, the third shoe in the signature line and the last before the Kobe 4 dropped the line to a low-top and changed what a basketball shoe was allowed to look like. That timing is why the 3 has always been slightly overshadowed. It is the shoe immediately before the argument, remembered mostly for the sculpted sheath panel down its side.

What happened in it is not overshadowed at all. In 2007-08 Bryant won the only Most Valuable Player award of his career, taking 1,100 of a possible 1,260 points with 82 first-place votes. He played all 82 games at 38.9 minutes, averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists, and led the league in total points with 2,323. The Lakers went 57 and 25, won the Pacific, reached the Finals and lost to Boston in six. He made All-NBA First Team and All-Defensive First Team the same year. For a line built on twenty shoes, that is the season with the trophy in it.

Protro is short for Performance Retro, and the programme started in February 2018 with the Zoom Kobe 1 Protro rather than the 4, which is the most commonly misreported thing about it. The idea is a retro whose tooling gets re-engineered to current spec rather than reproduced faithfully: less weight, newer cushioning, a smoother ride, a smaller carbon shank. On this pair that means full-length Air Zoom Strobel over Cushlon 3.0 foam, a retooled traction pattern Nike says cuts weight for a quicker court feel, and roughly 475 grams in a men’s nine at an eight millimetre drop.

The reason to be careful with the enthusiasm around the Nike Kobe line right now is volume. There have been thirteen separate Kobe 3 Low Protro colorways in 2026 alone. Sports Illustrated, writing about a different Kobe 3 releasing later this month, said a sell-out was probably unlikely because several Kobe 3 Low Protro colorways are currently sitting on shelves. This pair released September 1 and was still buyable on Nike almost three weeks later. The line is being produced like a general release and priced like a limited one, and those two facts are going to have to meet eventually.

There is one more thing the Low says about how Nike is handling this estate. The company and the Bryant family renewed their agreement in March 2022, and Vanessa Bryant teased this silhouette herself in August 2025 as a new shape coming the following year. So the decision to build a Kobe 3 that never existed was not a quiet product-line manoeuvre, it was announced by the family. That matters for how you read it. A brand inventing a low-top version of a dead athlete’s shoe on its own would be one thing. The people who own the name doing it is another, and it is the more defensible version.

Retail is $190 for the adult pair, with the grade school version at $122 on Nike. That sits below the $210 the first Kobe 3 Protro carried in August 2025 and well below the $230 the first Kobe 3 Low Protro asked in February. Nike has brought the price of this silhouette down twice inside a year, which is not what a brand does when a shoe is clearing.

Style code is IV7127-001, officially Pure Platinum and Armory Blue, with light grey across nearly the whole upper and blue branding against a metallic heel Swoosh. It released September 1 through Nike and SNKRS, with Foot Locker carrying the grade school run. Beyond those, no retailer has been named. Nike says the shoe uses more breathable materials without saying what they are, so the upper construction is unconfirmed.
