Nike‘s colorway string for this one reads Dark Smoke Grey, Iron Grey, Campfire Orange and Multi-Color, which is the least interesting possible description of a shoe with a grinning jack-o’-lantern molded onto each heel. The LeBron Witness X Halloween arrives on October 23, the tenth entry in LeBron James’s takedown line, and it is carrying the whole of Nike Basketball‘s Halloween storytelling this year. That is a strange place to put the fun, and where a brand puts the fun usually says who it thinks is buying.
The Witness has never been the headline shoe. Nike built the line as a takedown of the signature model, closer in spirit to the old Soldier series than to the LeBron numbers, and Complex covered the first LeBron Zoom Witness in July 2016 as exactly that, a cheaper silhouette without the visible technology of the flagship. It has run at roughly one model a year since, which is how a line nobody writes about arrives at a tenth entry.

What that history buys the shoe is a clear brief. Nike’s product copy for the Witness X describes a double-layer mesh upper meant to move freely and last, a Cushlon 3.0 midsole doing the cushioning work, a rubber outsole perforated so the foam underneath can expand, and a TPU shank through the midfoot for torsional support. No Air unit, no plate, no proprietary upper. It is a basketball shoe assembled out of parts Nike has had for years, and the line survives because that combination still plays on a court.
The makeup is where the effort went. The mesh is black with circular perforations punched through it, and the Swoosh on the lateral side is a pale glow green. On the back of each heel, molded into the counter, is a face in that same green, slanted eyes and a jagged toothy grin, a jack-o’-lantern read rather than a printed graphic. Below it sits a bright orange clip in a bracket shape, wrapping the base of the heel at the midsole. The tongue carries a dark red LeBron crown, the lace toggle is pale green, and the outsole is smoked dark with orange showing through near the forefoot and an orange crown set in the middle of the tread.

None of that is in the name. Iron Grey and Campfire Orange cover the clip and the outsole and say nothing about the face, which is the single most recognizable thing on the shoe. That gap is worth noticing because the colorway string is what the aggregators copy, so the feeds will carry this release as a grey basketball shoe and the picture will do all the explaining. It is also a reminder that Nike’s product naming is written for a merchandising system rather than for a reader.
October is a good month to watch Nike’s priorities, because Halloween product is optional and every brand chooses where to spend it. Jordan Brand put its version on the Air Jordan 5 and on the Air Force 1 ’01, both retro shoes with a buyer who pays retail without being asked twice. Nike Basketball put its version on the takedown. The read is that the Witness is now where the brand does the playful work, because the signature line is priced and marketed for a different customer and cannot afford to be silly. There is a second reading, less flattering to the category, which is that entry-price performance basketball is the only part of Nike Basketball moving enough volume to justify a seasonal makeup at all.

Either way, this is the better version of a Halloween shoe than most of what the month produces. The face is molded into the heel counter rather than screen printed over the quarter panel, the orange is structural instead of decorative, and the green is restrained enough that the pair still works as a plain black basketball shoe from any distance. A seasonal makeup that survives November is rarer than it should be.
Retail is $115. The comparison that matters sits inside Nike’s own product feed, which lists the LeBron XXIII at a $210 full price and a $115.97 current price, meaning last season’s signature shoe and this season’s takedown now cost the same money. The LeBron NXXT Gen By JuJu tells the same story at $170 full and $102.97 current. The Witness X holds its number because it was never priced on hype in the first place, and that is the quiet argument for buying one.
The Nike LeBron Witness X Halloween in Dark Smoke Grey, Iron Grey, Campfire Orange and Multi-Color is style code IX5286-001 at $115. Nike’s product feed carries an October 23 commerce date with no press release and no SNKRS launch entry behind it, so October 23 is Nike’s own on-sale date rather than an announced release.
