Nike Sabrina 4 Superstition Turns Ionescu’s Pregame Ritual Into a Colorway

Nike releases the Sabrina 4 Superstition on September 9 for $135, and the brief behind it is narrower than most signature colorways get. Sabrina Ionescu runs a fixed sequence before every game and does not consider herself ready for tip-off until she has finished it and sunk a shot from half court. Nike built a shoe around that habit. Pale purple, green and blue gradient, a name that says exactly what it is about.

The Sabrina line has been the quiet argument-winner in basketball footwear since 2023. The first model drew attention less for what it was than for who bought it, with NBA players and high school guards picking up a shoe launched out of Nike’s women’s program, which had not really happened before at that scale. Price was a large part of it. The line has consistently sat below flagship basketball models, and it moved on merit rather than on marketing budget. By the fourth model, Nike is no longer treating the Sabrina as a signature shoe that needs defending. It is treating it as a program shoe, handing it tournament colorways and youth circuit placements, which is what a brand does with a model it has stopped worrying about. That shift is the backdrop for a colorway like this one, because a line still fighting for legitimacy does not get to spend a release on an inside joke about a player’s pregame routine.

The Superstition keeps the whole upper in a pale, washed purple and saves the color for the parts that catch light. This one reaches for a superstition, which is a smaller and more human thing to put on a shoe, and it only works because the audience already knows enough about Ionescu to get the reference. That is a level of familiarity most signature athletes never reach, and almost no women’s signature line has been given the runway to build. Nike spending a release on a private habit is a sign of confidence in how well the audience knows her. It also fits a broader pattern in the line, which has generally been more comfortable with specificity than with spectacle. The Nationals colorway went to a tournament rather than a moment. This one goes to a routine rather than a story. Neither is the kind of release built to move on hype, and both suggest Nike is now selling the Sabrina to people who already follow her rather than to people it still has to convince.

The line has drifted up from where it started, but $135 for a current signature basketball shoe still undercuts most of what Nike is putting out this month.
