Nike’s First Running Shoe for India Launches on Flipkart, and the Rest of the World Waits a Year

Nike's First Running Shoe for India Launches on Flipkart, and the Rest of the World Waits a Year

Nike has introduced the Vegam Run, the first running shoe the brand has built specifically for India, and it goes on sale there on November 1 through Flipkart and select retail. Everyone else waits. Nike says the silhouette expands to additional markets during 2027, which makes this the rare Nike launch an American reader can follow and cannot buy. The shoe itself is a modest daily trainer. The thing Nike is actually announcing sits underneath it.

Nike has sold running shoes in India for a long time without ever designing one for it. The entry rungs of the global line, the Revolution and the Downshifter, are what the brand has historically pushed into price-sensitive markets, and those are worldwide products positioned downward rather than products shaped by the people buying them. The Vegam Run starts from the other end. Nike says it developed the shoe in partnership with runners across India, gathering how they actually run, train and move through a day, and the brief that came back was for one shoe that works on a run and for everything around the run. Nike never explains the name in the release. The sentence directly after it talks about speed, momentum and velocity, and vega in Sanskrit and vegam in Telugu both carry exactly that meaning, so the name is doing work the copy declines to point at. That restraint is unusual for a company that normally explains its own cleverness, and it reads as a shoe named for the market rather than at it.

The build is deliberately plain. An engineered mesh upper sits over full-length foam, with a stacked, textured rubber outsole and perimeter rubber that Nike calls out for durability and longevity. Pull tabs front and back make it quick to get on and off. There is no plate, no ZoomX, no visible Air, and no attempt to claim a race shoe underneath the everyday one, which is a more honest spec sheet than Nike usually ships at this tier. The press set shows two colorways, a saturated pink and a hard volt green, each photographed on a matching background rather than on white, and Nike says the colorways are locally inspired, with one tied to the After Dark Tour stop coming to Mumbai in December. The outsole rubber is the detail that gives the brief away. Perimeter coverage and a deep texture is what you specify when you expect the shoe to meet surfaces a treadmill never offers.

The number Nike wants quoted is not a price. The release states that the Vegam Run went from design brief to confirmed product in fifty-five days, and from concept to launch in roughly five months, and then says outright that this is a blueprint for how the brand intends to work. Putting a development timeline inside a product announcement is a message aimed at analysts and at Nike’s own organization as much as at runners in Pune. A company whose last few years of criticism have centred on a slow pipeline and a catalogue that looks like its own back catalogue is using a shoe almost nobody reading this can buy to demonstrate it can move. India is the right place to run that experiment, since the running population there is growing faster than the markets Nike already owns, and the cost of getting a first attempt slightly wrong is lower than it would be on a Pegasus. The Pegasus franchise does not get to be a test case. The risk Nike is taking is smaller than the announcement implies, and the signal it is sending is bigger. If the fifty-five day figure holds up on a second product, it changes what Nike can respond to and how late in a season it can respond. If it turns out to be a number attached to one shoe in one market, it was a press line.

Nike has not published a retail price, and the only guidance in the release is the phrase “a more accessible Nike Running price point,” which places the Vegam Run under the Pegasus tier in India without saying by how much. Nothing else in the announcement pins it down, so any figure circulating before Flipkart lists the shoe is a guess. The spec is the better comparison anyway. Full-length foam with no plate puts this in the same conversation as the daily trainers every brand sells as a first real running shoe, the category that ASICS and Saucony have been fighting over all year, usually with a foam story Nike is pointedly not telling here.

The Nike Vegam Run releases November 1 in India at Flipkart and select retail locations, with wider distribution across Nike’s partners in India in spring 2027 and additional markets worldwide during 2027. Nike has published no style code and no retail price, and no US release date has been given. Quotes in the announcement come from Deepa Ramprasad, Senior Director of Nike Road Running Footwear, and Tarundeep Singh, General Manager of Nike India.
