Nike Women’s First Sight Mirage Completes the Trilogy on a Clear Cleat Outsole

Nike Women's First Sight Mirage Completes the Trilogy on a Clear Cleat Outsole

Nike put the First Sight Noir out in July at $125 and said very little about it. On September 15 the same program returns with two more shoes on one morning, the Mirage at $170 and the Shadow at $145, and Nike’s own release copy calls that a completed trilogy. Three silhouettes, three prices, one design language, and Nike lists all three as women’s. That is a more deliberate piece of product planning than a single quiet launch suggested at the time.

First Sight is not a retro and it is not a borrowed model. Nike built it as a women’s line from the ground up, which is rarer than it sounds. Most women’s sneaker product at Nike is either a smaller cut of a men’s shoe or a colorway program on an existing silhouette, and the exceptions are usually attached to an athlete. The A’Two belongs to A’ja Wilson, the Sabrina line belongs to Sabrina Ionescu, and NikeSKIMS arrived attached to a very large outside brand. First Sight has none of that. It is a design concept with no signature athlete, no heritage story and no reissue to lean on, which means it either works on the shoes or it does not work at all. The Noir was the restrained opening statement, a tonal Light Bone and black shoe that sold on texture. The two that follow are not restrained at all.

The Mirage is the more extreme of the pair. It is finished head to toe in Light Crimson, a saturated red that covers the sculpted upper, the tongue, the collar and the laces, broken only by a small black Swoosh on the lateral side. Nike pairs synthetic suede and nubuck with open textiles across the upper, then sets the whole thing on what it describes as a lifted, cleat-inspired outsole. That outsole is the design decision carrying the shoe. An icy translucent midsole plate anchors a clear rubber bottom, and the traction elements read as stubby rounded studs rather than as tread, with Light Crimson returning at each cleat tip so the color shows through the clear rubber from underneath. The Shadow takes the opposite route. Nike calls it a futuristic slip-on drawn from early-2000s silhouettes and rooted in basketball, with a sculptural upper and court-inspired traction, in Light Crimson and Metallic Silver.

The read is in the price ladder. Noir at $125, Shadow at $145 and Mirage at $170 describe a range rather than a colorway pack, and brands build ranges when they expect to keep selling something. Most of Nike’s recent visible women’s output has come through partnerships and athlete lines, and both of those borrow their credibility from someone else. First Sight makes the argument on Nike’s own design work, and the Mirage is the shoe that tests whether it lands. A monochrome red sculpted trainer on a translucent cleat outsole at $170 is not a safe launch. It either reads as the most interesting thing Nike has put in a women’s lifestyle box in a while, or it reads as a concept shoe that got a retail price, and September 15 will settle which.

$170 puts the Mirage above almost everything in Nike women’s lifestyle. The Noir opened the program at $125, the Shadow follows at $145, and Nike’s own general release women’s running shoes like the Pegasus Plus 2 sit at $170 with a full performance stack underneath. Against retro pricing it looks closer to reasonable, since a women’s Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG runs $185 on Nike’s site right now. There is no resale history on First Sight, because the Noir has been out for less than two months and is a first-generation model with no comparison point. Anyone buying the Mirage at retail is buying a design, not a market position.
