The NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe Demerits Goes Black Leather and Keeps the White Swoosh

The NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe comes back on September 30 in black leather, and the name on it is Demerits. Tom Sachs supplied the reason. He was nearly expelled from high school for wearing soccer shoes to class instead of the required all-black dress shoes, and he solved it by coloring in the white Swoosh with a marker. The shoe built from that story arrives with the Swoosh left white.

The GPS has always been the plain one. Nike introduced it in May 2022 as an ordinary shoe for extraordinary people, the everyday counterpart to the Mars Yard, which had been the introduction to NikeCraft and was built around the idea of footwear for space-going scientists. The GPS took the same attention to detail and pointed it at a Tuesday.

Sachs framed it as a decade of work aimed at simplicity. “It took a decade to make a shoe this simple, as simple as can be and no simpler,” he said at launch, adding that NikeCraft “shuns innovation for its own sake, but embraces it as a necessity.” The first colorway was the Studio, a muted white knit upper on a gum midsole with blue donning straps, named for the uniform his own studio team wears, and it went on sale June 10, 2022 through nikecraft.com. The construction has barely moved since: a three-piece molded cup sole, the donning straps, a microfiber collar, and an upper open enough to breathe.

Demerits changes the upper and leaves almost everything else alone. The knit is gone, replaced by tumbled ECCO leather in black, and the switch pulls the shoe out of summer. The midsole stays gum, the three-piece cup sole stays, and the donning straps are blue nylon herringbone, the same signal color the Studio used.

The white leather panel wrapping the heel and ankle is the loudest thing on the shoe, and it carries NIKE embroidered in Sachs’ own handwriting. The tongue label is the orange NIKE box logo. Inside the collar is premium microfiber. On the medial side sits the hand-lettered NikeCraft spec label these have carried from the start, with a serial number, the Nike style number, and a paragraph explaining that NikeCraft shoes are manufactured to the exact specifications of champion athletes and support all the activities of your life.

And then there is the Swoosh, in white leather, on a black shoe, on a release named after being punished for wearing the wrong shoes.

The joke is the point, and it is a better one than most collaboration stories manage. The anecdote is about making a Swoosh disappear to satisfy a dress code. The product does the opposite, putting the largest, whitest Swoosh the GPS has ever carried on the one colorway that could have hidden it. Sachs has spent the NikeCraft years arguing that a shoe is a tool you mark up and repair rather than an object you preserve, and a white leather Swoosh on a black shoe is the fastest way to guarantee it looks used by week two. Stain it, tear it, repair it was the original line. Demerits points that line at the wearer instead of the shoe.

The release channel is worth watching too. This site had to correct the record earlier this year on how Sachs product reaches people: Mars Yard 3.0 sold in September 2025 through the I.S.R.U. app and conventional raffles, and a General Purpose pre-order ran on Sachs’ own store as a free, invitation-only make-good. Demerits is on SNKRS, in the same upcoming feed as the Air Max 1000 and the week’s Jordan retros. That is a wider door than this line has used lately.

Retail is $119.99. The Studio colorway is still listed at $109.99 on Sachs’ own store, so leather costs ten dollars more than knit and the line has held its price through four years. That is unusual for a collaboration carrying this much weight, and it reads as deliberate. Sachs has said the aim was to deliver value while still reflecting the standards of his studio. For context on the same shelf, Nike’s SB Force 58 sells for $85 and Field General By You runs $125, so the GPS sits where a good everyday Nike sits rather than where a signed art object sits. Whether it stays there on the secondary market has always depended on who is attached to the shoe.

The NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe Demerits releases September 30 at 7:00 AM on Nike SNKRS at $119.99 under style code FZ1363-002. The Studio colorway remains available on Sachs’ own store in the meantime. Nike has not published a wider retailer list, and the 2022 launch ran through nikecraft.com.
