The second shoe in Reebok‘s Avatar: The Last Airbender collection is the one that commits hardest to a single character. The Club C 85 arriving October 7 is built after Appa, the sky bison, in a hairy suede that sits somewhere between shearling and a stuffed animal, with a tan arrow laid down the middle of the vamp and an Appa print on the sockliner. Reebok‘s own copy promises a surprise embroidery inside the tongue and leaves it at that.
The Club C is one of the few Reebok models that has never really been redrawn. It arrived in 1985, the name is short for Club Champion, and it was built as a tennis shoe during the stretch when tennis shoes were the brand’s entire business. The original ran garment leather over a ventilated nylon tongue with a terry cloth lining and EVA foam underneath, which reads today like a list of comfort features and in 1985 was a competitive spec. By 1989 Reebok had phased out most of the models the Club C grew from, and in 1993 the brand formalized its archive under Reebok Classics with the Club C as a founding member. What happened after that is the useful part. Where the Classic Leather and the Workout were re-proportioned and reissued in a dozen slightly different cuts, the Club C stayed close to the shape it started with, which is exactly why it absorbs a collaborator without losing itself. Reebok also sold it into the same fitness wave that was making the brand rather than into professional tennis, so it was built soft from the start, and it has always worked better as a shoe somebody wears all day than as one somebody competes in.

This pair tests that. The whole upper is hairy suede, long enough to move when the shoe moves, in the off-white and tan Appa wears, and the tan arrow across the vamp is the only graphic on the outside of the shoe. The Reebok vector sits in the same tonal suede rather than contrasting, so from three feet away the shoe reads as a texture experiment rather than a licensed product. The sockliner prints Appa on a cream ground. The outsole stays the standard Club C tread in a dark gum. And the surprise embroidery Reebok will not name turns out to be YIP YIP, stitched in white across the inside of the collar, which is the command Aang uses to get Appa moving and the only place on the shoe where the license says anything out loud. Custom packaging comes with the pair. Hairy suede carries real risk on a low-top. It mats where the foot creases, it collects dust along the midsole line, and it photographs considerably better than it ages. The pairs that survive it are the ones where the pile is short enough to brush back, and the pile here looks long.

Two Club C collaborations inside three weeks says something about how Reebok is running this model. The Billionaire Boys Club Club C 85 landed September 25 with its astronaut hidden on the outsole, and now a Nickelodeon license lands on the same last with its reference hidden inside the collar. Both partners chose concealment, and that is the Club C’s actual function in the lineup. It is the shoe Reebok hands to a partner who wants a sneaker that works on a Tuesday, where the Instapump Fury 94 in this same collection is handed to a partner who wants to be seen from across the street. Running both strategies in one drop is the smartest thing about the collection. Reach is the rest of it. Avatar: The Last Airbender ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008 and has kept finding viewers ever since, which hands Reebok a buyer with no particular relationship to a 1985 tennis shoe and a very specific one to a flying bison.
Retail is $120, which is the same number Billionaire Boys Club carried three weeks ago, so Reebok has settled on a collaboration price for this model and is holding it. A general-release Club C 85 on reebok.com is $85, making the license worth $35 and the hairy suede presumably part of that. Inside the Avatar collection it sits second from the bottom, under the Engine A 26 at $140 and well under the Instapump Fury 94 at $220, with the Classic Nylon at $110. For a tooling that has not changed in forty years, the gap between $85 and $120 is the clearest read available on what a cartoon is worth to Reebok.

The Reebok x Avatar Club C 85 releases Wednesday, October 7 at 10:00 AM ET at reebok.com, in Chalk, Brown and Tan, style code 100283057, at $120. The Instapump Fury 94 and the Engine A 26 go up the same morning, and the Classic Nylon follows on October 8. Reebok’s own store is the only confirmed retailer at the time of writing.
