Salomon’s XT-Whisper Started as a Women’s Trail Shoe, and GORE-TEX Is Its Second Act

Salomon's XT-Whisper Started as a Women's Trail Shoe, and GORE-TEX Is Its Second Act

The XT-Whisper GORE-TEX closes out Salomon’s October 7 group in Gray Violet, Black and Ftw Silver, and it carries the strangest history of the three. The XT-4 and the XT-6 were built for elite trail racing and handed down to everybody else afterward. The XT-Whisper was not. Salomon built it because it looked at its own women’s range and found a hole in it, and the shoe that filled that hole is now the lightest thing in this release group and the one with a waterproof membrane in it.

Salomon’s own account is specific. The XT-Whisper was created in 2009 as the women’s version of the XT-Hawk trail shoe, made to answer what the brand describes as a call for much needed product for women in the market. That is worth reading slowly, because 2009 is deep inside the era when the women’s trail category was mostly a men’s shoe made smaller and recolored. Building a dedicated silhouette instead of a size run was not the default, and Salomon put its original Quicklace system on it, the same pull-tab closure that every XT since has inherited.

Seventeen years on, the shoe is unisex, which is the quiet part of this reissue. The XT-Whisper’s whole origin was that it existed for a group the industry was underserving, and the version going on sale next week is sold without a gender split at all. That is not a betrayal of the original brief so much as evidence that the brief worked. The shoe outlived the market condition that produced it.

What the GORE-TEX version actually changes is the liner and almost nothing else. Salomon lists the shoe at an 11 millimeter drop and 10 ounces, which makes it four ounces lighter than the XT-4 OG GORE-TEX and three lighter than the XT-6 Protective. A waterproof membrane normally costs weight, so holding the XT-Whisper under the rest of the line while adding one is the real engineering claim here. Above the membrane it is the remastered XT-Whisper as Salomon has been selling it: the wavy Sensifit cage sweeping from the midsole up over the laces, the Quicklace running through it, and a low, narrow profile that looks nothing like the chunky Salomons that sell on volume.

The Gray Violet, Black and Ftw Silver execution leans further into that. Silver and grey panels with black webbing, and the violet reading as a cast rather than as a color you would name from across a room. It is the most restrained of the three October 7 colorways and the only one that could pass for a performance shoe rather than a sportstyle one.

Which gets at why this release is the interesting one in the group. Salomon’s archive program has mostly been an exercise in finding the loudest shoes it ever made and putting them back out. The XT-Whisper is the opposite of that. It is small, light, structurally odd, and it sold originally on fit rather than on presence. Reissuing it with a membrane rather than with a collaborator is a bet that there are buyers who want the Salomon construction without the Salomon silhouette, and that bet has been paying off everywhere else in footwear for about three years now. The Air Jordan 1 Low Element GTX is Nike making the same wager from the other side, putting a trail outsole and a membrane under a shoe nobody is taking outdoors.

There is a limit to how far that reasoning carries and it is worth naming. The XT-Whisper does not have the shelf presence of an XT-6, and shelf presence is most of what has been selling Salomon to people who do not run. A narrow grey shoe with a membrane competes against every other narrow grey shoe with a membrane, and that is a crowded aisle with New Balance, ASICS and HOKA already standing in it. What the XT-Whisper has that those do not is the Quicklace and the cage, both of which are instantly readable at ten feet. Whether that is enough to carry a shoe this quiet is the real open question, and October 7 is when it gets answered.

At $165 the XT-Whisper GORE-TEX is the cheapest of the three and the cheapest waterproof shoe Salomon is releasing that week. The XT-6 Protective is $190 with a ripstop upper and no membrane, and the XT-4 OG GORE-TEX is $220 for the same waterproofing on an older and heavier shoe. The Genesis 2 GORE-TEX, an actual trail running shoe arriving the next day, is $170. So the lightest, most weatherproof sneaker in the group is also the least expensive one, which almost never happens and is the strongest reason to look at this release rather than the two louder ones beside it.

The Salomon XT-Whisper GORE-TEX in Gray Violet, Black and Ftw Silver releases October 7 at $165 under article reference L49192300, in unisex sizing, with a second colorway landing the same day. It is live on Salomon’s own product page and listed on the brand’s launch calendar. For the collaborative end of the same line, Kith’s XT-EVO is the useful reference point.
