Saucony‘s press release for the Daikanyama collection, dated September 18, names four shoes. Kinvara 1, ProGrid Omni 9, ProGrid Guide 7, Endorphin Speed 5. Open the collection page today and there are five. The extra one is the Endorphin Elite 3 in a makeup Saucony calls Owl and Black, it is in stock, it is wearing the same muted grey and sage as the rest of the capsule, and nothing the brand published in September accounts for it being there.
The Endorphin Elite sits at the top of Saucony’s road racing line, and everything under it in the Endorphin family runs a version of the same idea. SPEEDROLL is the brand’s name for the rocker geometry that tips a runner onto the forefoot earlier than a flat midsole would, and on this shoe it is printed on the tongue in plain type next to the words ENDORPHIN SERIES. The Elite 3 is the hardest expression of that idea Saucony sells. The midsole is a 40mm stack of incrediRUN foam built as two separate layers with a slotted carbon fiber plate set between them, which is a different arrangement from a plate riding on top of one slab. The outsole is PWRTRAC. The offset is 8mm, measured at 39.5mm at the heel and 31.5mm at the forefoot, and Saucony lists the shoe at 7.2 ounces in men’s sizing and 6.5 ounces in women’s. The brand’s own line is that this is the most efficient racing shoe it has built, redesigned on runner feedback.

Owl and Black describes this pair better than most colorway names manage. The upper is a flat grey mesh with no shine in it anywhere. Collar, tongue and heel counter are black. The laces are navy with a single periwinkle strand threaded through the eyelets, and that strand is the only bright thing on the shoe. A khaki heel tab and a khaki flash along the midfoot supply the warmth, and the Saucony chevron on the lateral side is outlined twice, once in dark maroon and once in off-white, instead of being filled in. The midsole is where the makeup earns its keep. The two incrediRUN layers are not the same color, so a pale sage band sits on a light grey base and the seam between them runs the length of the shoe. On a race shoe that usually ships as one bright slab, a visible two-tone foam stack is a decision rather than a manufacturing artifact. Saucony credits the Daikanyama collection to Josh Fraser, a designer who used to live in Tokyo, and this is the only shoe in the capsule where his brief has to survive contact with a carbon plate.

The omission is the part worth stopping on. Saucony announced Daikanyama as four shoes, three of them reissues of runners from the 2000s and one a current trainer, and sold it as retro tech. A capsule in that shape is low risk. The tooling is already paid for, the colorway does the work, and nobody expects a buyer to race in any of it. Putting the Elite 3 on the same page changes what the collection is asking for, because the design language is now carrying the most expensive and most technical shoe the brand makes, without the announcement or the imagery or the retailer push the original four got. That reads less like a fifth member of a capsule and more like a test. Saucony is finding out whether a design story people will pay for on a reissued Kinvara also moves a carbon racer, and it is running that test quietly enough that its own press page still says the collection has four shoes in it.
Retail is $290, which is what every Endorphin Elite 3 costs. The standard pair, the Space Cowboy version and this one are all priced identically, so the Daikanyama treatment carries no premium at all. What it carries is a gap. The rest of the capsule runs from $145 for the ProGrid Guide 7 to $175 for the Endorphin Speed 5, which puts this shoe roughly two thirds above anything else in its own collection. Three weeks after the September launch, the Daikanyama Speed 5 is already marked down to $129.95 on Saucony’s site while the Elite 3 holds full retail. The announced shoe is discounted and the unannounced one is not.

The Daikanyama Endorphin Elite 3 is in stock now at Saucony.com in unisex sizing from 3.5 to 15, at $290. Style code is S100981-1026 and the product number is 61308U. Saucony has published no launch date for this makeup, which is consistent with it never appearing in the collection announcement, so there is no drop time to set an alarm for. The brand’s own Daikanyama page is the only confirmed stockist for the Elite 3 version as of this writing, with the ProGrid Omni 9 and the rest of the capsule more widely distributed.
