The New Balance 204V Is a 204L With the Laces Taken Off

New Balance put the 204V out in July in two colorways, and this post used to describe it as a slip-on retro runner arriving in 2025. Three things in that sentence do not hold up. The year was wrong, the shoe is not a retro of anything, and New Balance has never called it a slip-on. All three came from the same place, which is a launch covered fast by outlets working from preview images rather than from product.

Start with what the 204V actually is, because the number implies a history it does not have. New Balance’s own copy for the 204L, the model this one reworks, calls it an unexpected interpretation of 2000s running-inspired style, blending the slim structure of seventies running shoes with the texture of premium suede. That is a reference to two decades, not to a shoe. New Balance names no archive 204 anywhere, on either product page or in its press box, and the brand’s newsroom has published nothing about the 204 family at all. Any writing that has the 204V nodding to a vintage New Balance runner is filling in a blank the brand left empty. The 204L itself only arrived in late 2025, which also makes a 2025 204V chronologically impossible and settles the date question on its own.

The closure is the one part of this shoe with no precedent in the 204L, and the notable thing is how carefully New Balance avoids naming it. The product page says only that an alternative closure delivers easy access, extra breathability and a unique aesthetic. Not slip-on, not strap, not hook and loop. Coverage split accordingly. Early previews in late June described an elastic or neoprene stretch entry. Later pieces written closer to retail, including JustFreshKicks, describe a wide Mary Jane strap across the top of the foot in place of the tongue and laces. Sneaker Bar Detroit published both versions in two different articles. The safe reading, and the one this post now carries, is that the shoe is laceless and the strap description comes from the outlets that had it in hand rather than from New Balance.

The rest of the spec is New Balance’s own. A multi-piece upper with an embossed overlay, screen-printed graphics along the saddle, premium suede and mesh, a moulded N, a low-profile sole, and an outsole New Balance describes as a 2000s-inspired strike path over a seventies tread pattern. It weighs 8 ounces. The midsole is EVA, and that single word is the most revealing thing on the page, because New Balance names no proprietary foam at all. No FuelCell, no Fresh Foam, no ABZORB. For a brand that has spent five years selling its lifestyle shoes on cushioning technology, shipping one with plain EVA at the same money as the model it reworks is a real decision. The 204V is a test of whether a closure and a silhouette can carry a shoe with no tech story attached to it, and that is a more honest position than dressing it up would have been. It also explains the positioning. New Balance is not asking anybody to believe this is a performance shoe, and the shoe is better for it, because the 204L has spent a year being bought by people who wanted the shape rather than the foam. Sneaker Bar Detroit reports that the 204V keeps most of the 204L outline and drops the medial N, which is the kind of edit a brand makes when it trusts the silhouette to be recognised without the branding.

Retail is $119.99, identical to the 204L it is built from, and $40 under where New Balance prices the 9060 and the 1906R at $159.99. There is no usable resale picture. GOAT and Flight Club both carry live listings, which confirms the shoe reached the secondary market, but neither exposes an ask or a last sale, and StockX could not be read. Treat resale on this one as unquantified rather than assuming it is soft.

The release month is July 2026, and the day is unsettled. Sneaker Bar Detroit published July 8, which is where this site’s original date came from. JustFreshKicks, SneakerNews, House of Heat and Gear Patrol all carry July 15. Four sources against one is why the stored date now reads the 15th, and the spread is recorded here rather than smoothed over. The July pair is U204VCMV in Fan Blue and Vintage Indigo and U204VMCV in Neo Flame, at $119.99, with a pastel trio following in August as U204V2PT, U204V2W0 and U204V7R8. New Balance, Sneakersnstuff and Renarts all stocked it.
